Hulu Fan-Favorite Sci-Fi Horror Franchise Is The Perfect Binge Before New Movie

By Britta DeVore | Published

In 1979, filmmaker Ridley Scott boldly went where no one had gone before when he combined the sci-fi genre with horror in the classic feature, Alien. Now, more than 40 years later, the Alien franchise is one of the most beloved ones out there, spanning six titles with another one, Alien: Romulus, set to release into cinemas later this month. Before heading to the theater, Hulu subscribers (or those who access the platform through their Disney+ account) can get caught up on the story so far as all six of the movies are now streaming.

Best To Start At The Beginning

There’s no better way to do an Alien franchise watch-through than starting at the top and working your way through each film which some may say gets worse with every title past the sequel. Still, even a bad movie can be appreciated with the right company, so grab your friends and get comfortable with a mix of cinematic masterpieces blended with B-movie fodder.

Franchise Starts Strong, But …

Alien

Alien is the title that served as the building block for the franchise with Sigourney Weaver playing a very cool crew member aboard a spaceship who comes into contact with a very hostile and downright demonic alien life-form. Weaver served as what many would consider to be the film series’ final girl, Ellen Ripley, appearing in the first four films. Along with being where the franchise all began, you could consider Alien to also be where Weaver’s career really began to take off as it would launch the actress into superstardom.

A few years later, Weaver’s Ripley found herself back in the madness of space in James Cameron’s Aliens, which is the top rated title of the series on Rotten Tomatoes, beating the original by one percentage point. It’s right around here that the movies start going downhill as, despite being under the supervision of legendary director David Fincher Alien 3 didn’t quite hit as hard with audiences.

Later Films Are Still Solid, But For Different Reasons

prometheus

The next three films in the Alien franchise, Alien: Resurrection, Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant, are also largely considered to be slogs to get through – save for Prometheus which many fans were hoping would be a return to the good ol’ days. Even though they might not be as terrific as the first half of the franchise, these movies still pack their own set of charming moments and are definitely worth at least one watch on your journey through the sci-fi horror series.

Alien: Romulus Is Just Around The Corner

Alien: Romulus

That brings us to 2024 and the upcoming production, Alien: Romulus. Fede Álvarez, the man behind the 2013 reimagining of Evil Dead, will bring the latest chapter in the Alien franchise to screens around the world. With a penchant for delivering intense kill scenes and plenty of gross-out sequences, we’re fully putting our faith in Álvarez to put the fear back into space.

Aliens

One thing that we’re thrilled to know will be making a comeback in the helmer’s fresh Alien flick will be the return of practical effects which is part of what made the franchise such a hit in the first place.

A man with a clear vision, Álvarez knows that sometimes CGI can only go so far which is why he turned to the creative team behind Aliens for tips and tricks on how to make the Xenomorphs and chestbursters come to life. While Weaver won’t be starring in the new movie, which takes place between Alien and Aliens, the cast will include names like Priscilla and Civil War star Cailee Spaeny, and Madame Web’s Isabela Merced.

Head to Hulu or Hulu on Disney+ now to stream the entire Alien franchise before Romulus comes to screens on August 16.
