Scarlett Johansson Returning To Marvel In Secret Project?
Scarlett Johansson has confirmed she is working on a Marvel project but is tight-lipped on the details.
Although her days of playing top secret super spy and all-around butt-kicker Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, may be behind her, there’s still a very likely chance that audiences will see Scarlett Johansson collaborate with Marvel once again. While rumors surrounding the star rejoining with studio head Kevin Feige on a project over the next few years have long been out there, Johansson recently confirmed that it was all true. But don’t get too carried away just yet, as it sounds like we’ll have a bit of time to wait until the production sees the light of day.
While speaking with ComicBook during a press junket for her upcoming film Asteroid City, Scarlett Johansson said that yes, there was still movement with the top-secret Marvel project but that things had come to a screeching halt due to the WGA strike. Giving hope to Marvel’s dedicated fan following who are in a state of speculation about what the film will be, the Lucy star said, “It is still happening,” but added that because Hollywood was shut down, it wasn’t moving forward at this current time.
Referring to the current state of the entertainment biz as being in a “holding pattern,” Johansson pointed not only to the writers’ strike but also the possible SAG-AFTRA strike that may shake out over the upcoming weeks.
And, while it would certainly be exciting to see Scarlett Johansson’s name on the call sheet for another MCU film, she’s been very straightforward and upfront that she won’t be returning to play Black Widow ever again. Instead, it would appear as though the Jojo Rabbit star will instead be taking more of a behind-the-camera job, joining Kevin Feige as a producer on the mystery project. Even with the studio unveiling its Phase 5 and pieces of its Phase 6 lineup, the title in question wasn’t there or, at the very least, didn’t jump out at fans.
Scarlett Johansson has been involved in the comic-turned-film franchise since all the way back in 2010’s Iron Man 2 when her character was first introduced. Since then, we’ve seen her star in a slew of Avengers films and even nab her own solo feature in 2021’s Black Widow. Sadly, Natasha Romanoff’s story came to an end in Avengers: Endgame when she sacrificed herself to prevent Thanos from getting his giant hands on the Soul Stone.
As devastating as it was for fans to bid adieu to Scarlett Johansson’s beloved character, the promise of her returning in some sort of capacity to future films is enough to keep us going. There are also entirely new characters and stars coming into the Marvel world, which will bring fresh stories to the forefront. Included in the upcoming months and years are Blade, Ironheart, Echo, and The Fantastic Four – just to name a few.
Even though she may not be busting baddies as Black Widow again any time soon, outside of her production team-up with Marvel, Scarlett Johansson is staying incredibly busy. The Academy Award-nominated performer will soon appear in Wes Anderson’s latest flick, Asteroid City, and is also attached to titles including Project Artemis, Transformers One, and My Mother’s Wedding.
