Now that all the legal drama between Scarlett Johansson and Disney has been wrapped up peacefully, it seems like Marvel Studios is back to being an avid fan of the actress. While her time as Natasha Romanoff came to an end with the recently released Black Widow, she will reportedly continue to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Kevin Feige announcing a “top secret Marvel Studios project” starring the Johansson.
Recently, Scarlett Johansson added another award to her growing list of laurels- she became the 35th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. As reported by Deadline, Marvel boss Kevin Feige was also present to heap praise on the Jojo Rabbit star for her “talent,” “vision”, as well as for her “intelligence and savvy” as an actress and a producer. But the spotlight of his speech was when he teased that the studio is reteaming with Johansson on a “top secret Marvel Studios project.”
He added that Scarlett Johansson will not just star in the upcoming Marvel Studios project but will also be on board as its producer. Interestingly, Feige further clarified that her MCU comeback won’t see her return as Black Widow. Even though this “secret” project won’t have her as the beloved Avenger, the possibility exists with Giant Freakin Robot exclusively reporting that Johansson is set to reprise her role as the Black Widow one more time in the future.
As Feige explicitly ditched the possibility of Scarlett Johansson’s return as Black Widow, it is clear that this mystery Marvel project won’t be another prequel exploring Natasha’s turbulent history. But now that the multiverse has finally been ushered into the MCU, there are many characters that Johnasson can play. While Natasha is dead in the main timeline, there are now countless other timelines she can exist in. But going by what Feige said, she will not be Black Widow in any of them.
We have already seen a glimpse of characters “switching” their traditional roles in other timelines, like T’Challa as Star Lord in a different timeline and Peggy Carter ending up as Captain Britain instead of Steve Rogers becoming Captain America. Maybe Scarlett Johansson will be seen playing a different version of a Marvel character who already exists in the prime timeline or perhaps, the studio has plans of re-introducing the actress as a whole new character. The possibilities are endless and we are already daydreaming about Johansson as Sue Storm in the upcoming Fantastic Four film!
No matter what enticing role Marvel Studios pitched Scarlett Johansson, it is enough for ardent fans of the actress that she will be coming back to the MCU, something which had seemed like a distant dream a few months ago. Until recently, Johansson and Disney had been locked in a legal tussle over the latter releasing Black Widow simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, thus costing the actress millions of dollars in revenue.
But both parties have finally mended their relationship without taking the matter to the court. Alan Bergman, Chairman of Disney Studios Content, even quashed (via Deadline) rumors of Disney removing Scarlett Johansson from the upcoming Tower of Terror project and the actress has assured that she will continue her “creative relationship” with the production house.
