Saturday Night Live Star Is Finally Making A Sequel To Their Best Movie
Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are teaming up, finally, for Goodburger 2, the sequel to their 1997 hit comedy that came out of Nickelodeon's All That.
90s kids will surely rejoice at the nostalgia-filled news of the Kenan and Kel reunion we’ve all been waiting for! Paramount+ has announced a sequel to the 1997 comedy classic Good Burger, starring Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, according to a write-up in The Hollywood Reporter. Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert are set to write, and executive produce Good Burger 2, with Fresh Off The Boat‘s Phil Traill attached to direct.
The announcement has fans abuzz across the internet, as Good Burger 2 has been rumored for years, with many fans of the original holding out hope the sequel would one day be a reality. Production is scheduled to begin as early as May, with the film expected to arrive on Paramount+ by the end of the year. The film franchise originally began as an All That sketch, in which excellent customer service is provided via the Good Burger fast food restaurant.
Good Burger 2 will likely continue where the original film left off, with Kenan and Kel’s Ed and Dexter working at Good Burger and caring for their loyal base of valued customers. The 1997 original followed Kenan’s Dexter, a 16-year-old slacker embroiled in debt as he befriends Kel’s Ed, a dimwitted but good-hearted Good Burger cashier who creates a homemade sauce that drives sales through the roof. The two quickly become partners and expose the evil corporation behind the giant fast food chain, Mondo Burger.
The original film was written by frequent Nickelodeon creator Dan Schneider, who also created and executive produced hit series for the children’s programming network such as Drake and Josh, iCarly, and Victorious. Schneider will certainly not be asked to return for Good Burger 2, as the network parted ways with him in 2018, citing misconduct by former employees, as detailed in iCarly star Jennette McCurdy’s recent autobiography, shockingly titled I’m Glad My Mom Died. Throughout the controversies that have plagued numerous child stars, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are both widely regarded as well-rounded and nonproblematic individuals, marking them as fan favorite performers for any children who grew up consuming television in the late 90s or early 2000s.
As everyone surely knows, Kenan Thompson followed up his Good Burger career by joining and subsequently becoming the longest-tenured cast member in the history of Saturday Night Live, while Kel Mitchell has taken on several smaller roles and focused on his career as a dancer. Good Burger 2 will mark the first time since the conclusion of their Nickelodeon sitcom Kenan and Kel in 2000 that the pair will work together on a full-length project. Their last aired collaboration came in the form of a series of scattered sketches reprising their past sketch comedy roles from 2015 to 2018.
Though Good Burger received critically mixed responses, the film was highly profitable and provided endless entertainment to its loving base of supportive viewers. With Kenan and Kel both enthusiastically returning for the sequel, Good Burger 2 looks to be a major hit!
