The upcoming Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is one of the most highly anticipated shows the streamer has on the docket. Fans are crossing their fingers that the show gets the beloved comic book right, and if the new high-res images are anything to go by, it looks like they at least nailed the casting and the visuals. You can see those photos below.

The new images for The Sandman give us better looks at characters like Dream, Death, Lucifer, Corinthian, and Johanna Constantine. Tom Sturridge stars in the adaption as Morpheus, the living embodiment of the concept of dreams. Dream, or Morpheus, is one of the seven Endless, that also include concepts like Death, Desire, Destiny, and more. The comic series follows Dream after he escapes imprisonment from a cult, wandering the world to undo his misdeeds. The first season of the show will be based on the first volume of the comic series, Preludes & Nocturnes. Gaiman has said that there will be additional elements of the series added to the Preludes & Nocturnes story.

As expected with a cult-classic adaptation of a beloved series, toxic fan backlash is already pretty strong. The primary complaints have come from vocal social media users who have a problem with the color-blind and gender-blind casting process. Some of the complaints have been about Kirby Howell-Baptiste, a black woman, being cast as Death who was portrayed with pale white skin in the comics. The other complaints come from fans upset with Gwendoline Christie being cast as Lucifer Morningstar, the ruler of Hell who has been portrayed with masculine features in the comics. However, since these are fictional characters and the Endless are living embodiments of intangible concepts, these complaints have been mostly met with eye rolls from others looking forward to the series, as well as the creator of The Sandman himself, Neil Gaiman.

These new high-res images are definitely some of the best looks we’ve seen of some of The Sandman‘s characters. We’ve been drip-fed images here and there, and the Netflix first look trailer gave us a little bit of action, but the series has been shrouded in mystery since its inception. While we may have a little bit longer to wait to see the first season of the series, there is a quality Audible Original podcast of the comic available to keep fans sated until then. The podcast series has a stacked cast of voice talent, including James McAvoy, Andy Serkis, Kat Dennings, and Neil Gaiman as the Narrator.

Along with Sturridge, Howell-Baptiste, and Christie, Netflix’s The Sandman will star Jenna Coleman, Joely Richardson, Patton Oswalt, Boyd Holbrook, David Thewlis, Charles Dance, Stephen Fry, Donna Preston, Mason Alexander Park, John Cameron Mitchell, Niamh Walsh, Razane Jammal, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Nina Wadia, and Asim Chaudhry. The series is co-created by Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg and is based on the DC Vertigo comic by Gaiman. You can see if they’re able to pull off the adaptation for yourself when it hits Netflix on August 5.
