Samuel L. Jackson Reveals A Young Nick Fury Will Be In Secret Invasion Series
Old Nick Fury or Young Nick Fury? Or both?
This article is more than 2 years old
Legendary actor Samuel L Jackson has posted an image on Instagram with a new hint as to the upcoming Secret Invasion series. In the photo posted, he is sporting a bushy mustache and goatee (and kind of a quizzical, unimpressed expression, for the record) and no eyepatch. This is in contrast to some of the released images of his MCU character Nick Fury for Secret Invasion, in which he has a much longer, much grayer, much more untidy beard, scars across his face and a vividly blue eye. The caption, which includes the phrase “Old School Fury Day” seems to be indicating that a younger version of Nick Fury may be a part of the series. But considering this Disney+ show is centered around the shapeshifting alien species known as the Skrulls, it’s anyone’s guess whether this is really Nick Fury. Check it out:
Samuel L. Jackson is tied with Robert Downey Jr. as the actor with the most Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances thus far, with an even 11 each. However, considering Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man is now canonically dead (and if rumors are true, may be replaced by Tom Cruise for at least a cameo in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Jackson is bound to very much be in the lead. While his character of former SHIELD director Nick Fury has generally played a background role in most of his appearances as the world’s most grizzled spymaster, Secret Invasion will have him taking a more prominent role. And as the end credits scene of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home revealed, Fury has been replaced by a Skrull impostor on Earth, so it seems likely we will see several different versions of the character.
There is also precedent for a young Nick Fury in the MCU. In the 2019 Captain Marvel movie, set in the 1990s, a digitally de-aged Samuel L. Jackson assisted Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) against what appeared to be a Skrull invasion. While that plot point turned out to be murkier than it initially seemed, the comic book event being adapted for Secret Invasion did involve exactly that. Plot details are still largely unrevealed, but it is known that Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke will be joining the cast as an unknown new MCU character. We also have it on very good authority that there will be returning MCU players like Larson’s Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau and Ben Mendelsohn will reprise his role as the Skrull Talos.
Between full scale theatrical releases of films like Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios has ramped up production of streaming shows. Secret Invasion is slated to be released some time in late 2022, while we have already gotten Hawkeye and WandaVision in the last year. As with all MCU adaptations, it will be interesting to see how faithfully Marvel Studios follows the original storyline of Secret Invasion, but at least, we’re going to get a whole lot of Samuel L. Jackson.
