Sam Raimi Directing Avengers: Secret Wars?
Sam Raimi gave us some of the best superhero movies of all time with his Spider-Man trilogy, and recently he gave the MCU a shot with the solid Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Raimi definitely knows superheroes well and has a distinct directorial style, and fans have been suggesting that he might be a good fit for the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. Now even Raimi himself is apparently on board with the idea, as he recently told ScreenGeek at WonderCon, “I love 90 percent of the Marvel heroes that I’ve read in the great Stan Lee Marvel Universe comic books,” and “I would love to work with Marvel again.”
Marvel Hasn’t Made A Commitment
However, Sam Raimi caveated this by saying, “They haven’t asked me yet.” So, while fans could certainly see Raimi directing Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel Studios still seems to be weighing its options. There’s certainly still time to ask him, though, as the project isn’t set to come out until 2027, and there’s a chance it could be pushed back yet again in the future.
Doctor Strange And The Multiverse Of Madness
Sam Raimi has already more than proven himself capable of making a successful MCU movie, as his Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness came in just shy of $1 billion at the global box office. The fact that Raimi was able to make $1 billion from a non-Spider-Man and non-Avengers movie certainly proves that he could likely make the MCU quite a bit of money with a Secret Wars movie. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness was also well-reviewed by fans.
Raimi’s Success With Superheroes
Of course, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy was also massively successful, bringing in over $2.5 billion over the course of the series. Raimi has even indicated that he would want to do a Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire, which would fulfill another long-time fandom wish. Of course, directing another successful film like Avengers: Secret Wars would be a great way to signal to the MCU that fans want more of what Raimi brings to the table.
The Kang Problem
Marvel’s Avengers fans are currently a little out of whack after firing Jonathan Majors from his role as Kang the Conqueror. While Kang was being set up as the next major Avengers villain, his departure means that the MCU may need to make a villain pivot if they don’t just simply recast Majors. If Sam Raimi was able to pull off a fun Avengers: Secret Wars adaptation, it would definitely be a good course correction for the MCU.
The Only Film Of 2024
In the meantime, Marvel is quietly trying to get the MCU back on track by taking a less-as-more approach as the cinematic landscape is increasingly saturated with superhero content. The nostalgic X-Men ‘97 has been a massive success despite not being connected to the greater MCU, and the hype is building for the only MCU film release this year – Deadpool & Wolverine. Fans also loved the recent announcement of the Fantastic Four cast, so making an announcement like Sam Rami directing Avengers: Secret Wars would be a great way for Marvel to keep the positive vibes going.
Raimi’s Latest Project
In any case, we’ll just have to wait and see if Marvel decides to bring Sam Raimi back for Avengers: Secret Wars or any other project. You can stream the latest Marvel release, X-Men ‘97, on Disney+ now. You can also look forward to Raimi’s upcoming project Boy Kills World, which is set for an April 26 release date.
