Sam Jackson has had such a prominent role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick Fury. The character has been central to so many stories and character arcs, often appearing as a sage in terms of wisdom while also understanding how the puzzle of the Avengers’ world fits together in the big picture. But for all of the on-screen time, Sam Jackson’s character has never been the headliner of a single show or movie. That appears set to change going forward with Marvel developing a series specifically around Sam Jackson.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe will have a number of different tie-ins to new shows coming to Disney+ and one of those is Secret Invasion. This will be the Sam Jackson-led series in which he’ll reprise his role as Nick Fury. Secret Invasion will be based on the 2008 comic book series of the same name. In the original story, the shapeshifting Skrulls plan to take over Earth by impersonating different Avengers. This deceit causes more than a little strife and distrust around the group considering it’s unclear who is who or who can be trusted.
Head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige outlined some of the plans for Sam Jackson in Secret Invasion which will likely feature more than a few original Avengers cast members as well as new characters being introduced to the universe in Phase Four. Considering Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury already has experience with the Skrulls dating back to their run-ins in Captain Marvel, it makes sense this character will be the lead of the show.
Sam Jackson apparently will once again have it out with Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, one of the primary Skrull antagonists. Those two are definitely on board for the new series. But the rest of the cast is currently a mystery. The original publication featured nearly every major character in the Marvel Universe which, according to Fiege, would make the casting (if they stuck to the story) even larger than Avengers: Endgame. He’s admitted they’ll likely have to pair down some of the scope there.
But there are still plenty of ways to take Sam Jackson as the lead in this new show and though it’s unlikely to be as big an event as we’ve seen at the end of the Endgame, the studio has already laid the groundwork to easily tie in new characters and stories.
Again, though he never headlined any one show or movie, Sam Jackson has been as prominent a figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as anyone else. To date, he’s appeared in almost half (11 out of 23) of the Marvel movies with some roles (Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain Marvel) being bigger than others. But he’s always been a constant thread.
With Marvel’s Phase Four ramping up with the premier of WandaVision this week, it’s an exciting time for new stories around this universe.
Getting more Sam Jackson as Nick Fury is just another reason to get pumped for a whole host of new shows, old characters, and much more. Currently, Secret Invasion is set to premiere on Disney+ some time in 2022.
