Sam Jackson Facing Off Against Deadpool?
Sam Jackson may be showing up in a Deadpool movie soon.

You know what would just be the best? If Nick Fury and Deadpool got into a banter session that lasted a whole movie. Just insulting each other in a neverending stream of probably very vulgar nonsense. If there were two characters who could keep that interesting for at least an hour and a half, it would be Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool.
Apparently, Marvel is up for it. At least, according to what Mikey Sutton as Geekosity Mag is hearing. His sources tell him that the studio is interested in adding Sam Jackson to a Deadpool sequel. Having Nick Fury in a Deadpool movie helps form a better connection for Wade Wilson into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, there’s really not a better character to do that with than Nick Fury, so this rumor has the weight of sense to it.
There’s also the fact that Sam Jackson sparring with Deadpool just sounds immediately hilarious.
As Geekosity points out, Marvel has to be careful with the characters they use with Wade Wilson. Deadpool is firmly R-rated, while other Marvel Cinematic Universe films tend to be PG-13 or under. Which characters can they realistically have hanging out with Wade Wilson? Well, Sam Jackson as Nick Fury should be able to spar just fine with Deadpool without stretching his character.
Another possibility that Geekosity hears is that the sequel will have Sam Jackson and Ryan Reynolds joined by Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Jackman has said he’s done in the role, but Geekosity hears he is considering his options. Wolverine would be a great character to hang out with Deadpool. He’s grumpy and R-rated friendly. He also has self-healing abilities that, while different from Wade Wilson’s, are certainly something the pair could bond over in a hilarious scene.
Geekosity added that his sources described Marvel’s idea for a sequel with the three stars as “Three Amigos on steroids”, which sounds apt.
Sam Jackson and Ryan Reynolds have worked together before, so their chemistry has already been proven. You can watch them in 2017’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard. If you never saw that, even just watching the trailer gives you a better picture of how this pair work together. Just recently, the trailer for the sequel to that movie dropped, where the pair will be joined by Salma Hayek.
The pair are apparently interested in working together more. In 2020, it was announced that Sam Jackson and Ryan Reynolds would be working together on an animated series called Futha Mucka. The series was for the short-form streaming network Quibi, which has since folded. While that project didn’t happen, perhaps it makes the most sense for their next project together to be within the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that Wade Wilson is officially part of it.
It seems inevitable that Sam Jackson and Ryan Reynolds will meet at some point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A Deadpool sequel makes sense as the place for the studio to make that happen, though there are certainly other opportunities where Wade Wilson could appear in an MCU movie at the same time as Fury. Still, with a Deadpool sequel, there may be a lot more room for the pair to face off than if they simply met in another project. We’ll have to wait to see if this rumor pans out.
