Salma Hayek became a major Hollywood star with her breakout action role in 1995’s Desperado. Over the years, Hayek proved that she isn’t just made for romantic films through her rich resume which includes playing many badass characters dealing out majorly solid punches and action scenes. And in 2021, she is returning to her golden years as the action star, starting with Hitman’s Wife‘s Bodyguard opposite Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. And in case anyone believes that her punches on-screen are just for show and lack any real force needs to hear Reynolds’ recent admission of how he is still reeling from the time Hayek slapped him real hard.
During a chat with Variety, Ryan Reynolds shared a hilarious anecdote that took placed during the shooting of Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. As readers already know, unlike the first film where Salam Hayek played a small role of Sonia who is Samuel L. Jackson’s Darius Kincaid’s wife, the sequel will see her in a prominent action-filled lead role. Reynolds shared that throughout the film, Salma Hayek slaps him twice and Samuel L. Jackson slaps him once. But it’s Hayek’s slaps that he is still feeling almost a year after they wrapped up the filming as she “didn’t pull the punches. Not even once.” Reynolds humorously shared that the sharp sting of her slaps on his “soft Hollywood cheekbones” is still there.
In Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, Salma Hayek will be seen saving Ryan Reynold’s Michael Brice, who is on a break from bodyguarding, from being assassinated. But she has not saved his life for free- she needs his help in rescuing her husband who has been missing for a while. Though Brice agrees, he will have to carry out the mission without any weapons as per the terms of his sabbatical. If Hitman’s Bodyguard and Salma Hayek’s comedic flare along with her action chops are anything to go by, we are in for a major comedy-filled action ride with the sequel!
After Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard releases on June 16th, Salma Hayek will be seen as Pina Auriemma in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci due to release on November 24, 2021. She will be playing the self-proclaimed psychic who helped Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) in murdering her ex-husband Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver). Before this, she will be seen as the superhero Ajak in Marvel’s Eternals, which will be releasing on November 5 as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4.
Apart from this, Hayek is also busy with the multiple projects she has signed under her production company, Ventanarosa, including a tv series, titled A Boobs Life, an adaptation of the New York Times bestseller Valentine for HBO, and a series about the infamous mystery of Eva Perón’s corpse. During her chat with Variety, Salma Hayek also shared plans of directing a yet-to-be-announced film based on a script she had written 17 years ago.
Ryan Reynolds too has a busy year ahead. Soon after Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, the Deadpool star will be seen in Free Guy, a science fiction action comedy directed by Shawn Levy, followed by the release of the Netflix comedy-thriller, Red Noticestarring Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne Johnson.
