Salma Hayek Cast In Netflix’s Best Show
Salma's coming to Netflix!
Say what you want about Netflix canceling too many shows; the fact is the streamer still has some of the best series you’re going to find anywhere. Between Squid Game, Stranger Things, Cobra Kai, and Bridgerton the streamer still has plenty to offer. Now it looks like the Oscar-nominated actress Salma Hayek is headed one of the best Netflix series ever. The House of Gucci star is in talks to join the cast of Black Mirror.
On Friday, Variety reported Salma Hayek is in talks to join the cast of Netflix’s dystopian sci-fi series for its upcoming sixth season, and she isn’t alone. Also up for a role in the new season is Annie Murphy of Schitt’s Creek fame. It isn’t clear what parts either will play or in what episodes. Black Mirror is an anthology series, with each episode giving fans a differently twisted reality; examples include a world where all life is recorded for video playback, and in another criminals have their memories erased and are hunted as part of a popular game show.
Whatever parts Salma Hayek and Annie Murphy are up for in Black Mirror, they’ll be joining an already impressive cast. In the beginning of July, THR and others reported Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Kate Mara (House of Cards), Josh Hartnett (Penny Dreadful), Zazie Beetz (The Batman), and Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) had all landed parts in season 6 of the series. More recently, on Thursday, Deadline broke the news that Rory Culkin (Signs) would also appear.
Assuming all the negotiations work out and Salma Hayek shows up to whatever hellish reality Black Mirror puts her in, it’s bound to be yet another sign of the star’s comeback. Hayek didn’t disappear from the public eye, though her screen work did slow down notably between 2018-20; of course, considering the consequences of COVID-19, she isn’t alone in that regard. But this year and last have witnessed a fierce resurgence in her career.
Last year Salma Hayek made her Marvel debut as the head of the titular heroes in Eternals and landed a supporting role in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci. Later this year, we’ll hear her reprise the role of Kitty Softpaws alongside longtime colleague Antonio Banderas in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. This week, Hayek told Deadline she had just finished filming Without Blood, helmed by her Eternals co-star Angelina Jolie. The film is based on the 2008 novel by Alessandro Baricco. Set after the conclusion of an unnamed military conflict, Without Blood tells the story of Hayek’s character’s vengeance for the deaths of her family.
Along with becoming a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Salma Hayek joined another popular franchise in the past couple of years, but something worries us about whether or not we’ll ever see it. Hayek is part of the cast of Magic Mike’s Last Dance; the final film in Channing Tatum’s stripper trilogy. Originally, the film was supposed to skip theaters to stream on HBO Max. Of course, there’s since been a lot of upheaval at HBO Max, including Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav expressing a lot of disinterest in the idea of releasing films directly to streaming, which is one of the reasons for the cancellation of Batgirl. The Magic Mike film has yet to be mentioned amidst the carnage, and we hope it remains that way.
