Sailor Moon Comes To An End This Summer On Netflix
Any kid growing up in the ‘90s no doubt has memories of seeing Sailor Moon on the Toonami anime block alongside shows like Dragon Ball Z, and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. So it has been a long time in the making for Sailor Moon to have its big finale, which is coming this August in the form of the movie Sailor Moon Cosmos. It is a two-part film, and it will be debuting on Netflix on August 22.
The Japan release of Sailor Moon Cosmos happened in theaters back in 2023, but that left international fans feeling excluded and disappointed.
Sailor Moon Cosmos will serve as the fifth and final season of Sailor Moon Crystal, a reboot of the original show that started in 2014. Much like Dragon Ball Z Kai, Sailor Moon Crystal was made to be a more faithful adaptation of the original manga content it was based on. With anime, it is very common for the shows to start while the manga is still in production, resulting in the show ultimately catching up to the manga and needing to create original content to keep the show going.

Fans have had to wait patiently for Sailor Moon Cosmos for quite a while. The last movie in the series, Sailor Moon Eternal, came out in 2021 also as a two-parter. Meanwhile, the TV series Sailor Moon Crystal wrapped up in 2015 with its first three seasons, meaning fans have been left waiting for almost a decade to see the conclusion of the full story as it was in the manga.
In fact, some Sailor Moon fans are expressing disappointment that Sailor Moon Cosmos will not be getting a theatrical release internationally like it did in Japan.
Even with how many delays there have been in new Sailor Moon content, it remains one of the most recognizable and beloved anime ever made. The original series was a gateway for many young girls to start getting invested in anime as they were able to enjoy a show with a predominantly female cast. Though those fans are much older now, the fanbase has not forgotten their love for the series, and excitement for Sailor Moon Cosmos is very high.
If the reaction to the various new Dragon Ball properties that have come out in recent years has demonstrated anything, it is that anime fans have long memories of their favorite series. Nostalgia for their favorite characters consistently has anime fans returning for the latest movies and releases in long-running series.
