Safe House 2 is currently in development along with Ryan Reynolds, who starred in the original 2012 film along with Denzel Washington. According to our trusted and proven sources, a sequel to the Daniel Espinosa thriller film is currently part of the Deadpool actor’s extremely busy slate of projects, though the involvement of the original director and Denzel Washington is currently up in the air. While Safe House is not one of the fondly remembered movies of the actor’s career, it is a reasonable bet that Safe House 2 could be another solid, medium-large hit for Ryan Reynolds.
The original Safe House film starred Ryan Reynolds as Matt Weston, an inexperienced CIA agent in charge of a company “safe house” (which is to say, a covert secure location for spy operations) in South Africa. Along with his mentor and superior agent David Barlow (Brendan Gleeson, soon to be starring in Joker: Folie à Deux), Ryan Reynolds becomes involved in an operation involving a former agent turned criminal named Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington). It seems Denzel Washington has come across a MacGuffin in the form of a hard drive that everyone is willing to kill for, and Ryan Reynolds has to figure out who to trust.
All in all, Safe House is a fairly standard and acceptable spy thriller. It currently holds 53% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed a respectable $208 million against an $85 million budget, all of which means that Safe House 2 is a solid proposition for both Ryan Reynolds and Universal Pictures. While many movie stars begin to become more selective with their choice of roles as they rise to the A-list, one can never accuse Ryan Reynolds of being choosy with his movies.
Safe House 2 will join a long list of upcoming projects for Ryan Reynolds, the most prominent of which is the upcoming Deadpool 3. The third Deadpool movie will introduce the mega-popular to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with giving the MCU its first R-rated movie. Though the movie was already highly anticipated, the announcement that Hugh Jackman had finally cracked under pressure and agreed to reprise the role of Wolverine in the movie bumped it up to “feverishly awaited.”
We recently reported that Ryan Reynolds is also looking to get original X-Men stars James Marsden and Halle Berry to appear in the film, so it seems like Deadpool is trying to collect as many mutants as he can. Safe House 2 will probably not be quite as anticipated by fans, but it is nice to know that Ryan Reynolds does not consider himself above a straightforward spy thriller these days.
In addition to Safe House 2 and Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds is currently starring in the FX docu-series Welcome to Wrexham along with Mythic Quest’s Rob McElhenney, which invites viewers to see what happens when two very rich men impulsively decide to buy a football club for no particular reason. Ryan Reynolds will also be starring with Will Ferrell in Spirited, a musical take on A Christmas Carol for Apple TV+.
