Ryan Reynolds Teams Up With Zoe Saldana In The Adam Project Trailer
Ryan Reynolds and Zoe Saldaña kick butt across time!

Ryan Reynolds is making a time travel odyssey and he won’t be alone. A new trailer just dropped for the upcoming sci-fi action flick The Adam Project, and Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Zoe Saldaña joins Reynolds for the Netflix film. The full nature of Saldaña’s character isn’t clear, but judging by the trailer she’s just as formidable as her Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart. You can watch the trailer below.
You ever humor one of those hypotheticals, e.g. “If you could go back and talk to yourself as a child, what would you say?” Well, in The Adam Project, Ryan Reynolds’ character turns the hypothetical into a reality. Reynolds plays Adam, a time traveling pilot whose father (Mark Ruffalo) died when he was a boy. The grown up Adam uses his time traveling ship to go back and recruit his younger self (Walker Scobell) in helping him confront his father.
Judging by the trailer, Ryan Reynolds’ older Adam won’t be the only tourist from the future. There are a number of action scenes in the woods with Reynolds clashing with sci-fi soldiers. It’s only speculation, but perhaps traveling through time isn’t something his character is supposed to be doing?
Zoe Saldaña’s character is perhaps the most mysterious of the bunch. When we first see her in the trailer, it seems like she’s flirting with Ryan Reynolds in a perfectly present day bar. But later she appears to be navigating futuristic tech as easily as Gamora would.
If the trailer makes you think of similar feel-good sci-fi/fantasy from the ’80s and ’90s, that’s no accident. Director Shawn Levy says to expect action and comedy in the vein of the 1985 classic Back to the Future, but that “the heart of it” is inspired the 2000 sci-fi thriller Frequency and the 1989 fantasy Field of Dreams. Frequency stars Dennis Quaid as a man who speaks to his dead father across time on a ham radio, while in Field of Dreams Kevin Costner builds a baseball diamond in the middle of a cornfield where the ghosts of dead baseball players come to play, including one of his late father.
This won’t be Ryan Reynolds’ first time working with Shawn Levy. The pair collaborated on 2021’s runaway hit Free Guy, which starred Reynolds as an NPC in an online video game. Production began on The Adam Project, in fact, almost as soon as filming wrapped on Free Guy.
While The Adam Project clearly doesn’t look to be anything like Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool films, it’s tough — considering all the Marvel stars in the movie — to not want at least a little fourth-wall breaking nod acknowledging it. With Reynolds you have Deadpool, with Saldaña you have Gamora, with Ruffalo you’ve got the Hulk, and there’s even a pre-MCU Marvel hero in there. Adam’s mother is played by Jennifer Garner who — Hulk help us — played Elektra in 2003’s Daredevil and the almost universally hated Elektra from 2005.
The Adam Project will begin streaming on Netflix on Friday, March 11. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, newcomer Walker Scobell, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich), Zoe Saldaña, and Alex Mallari Jr. (Ginny & Georgia). The Adam Project is directed by Shawn Levy (Free Guy) from a script by Jonathan Tropper (See), T.S. Nowlin (Pacific Rim: Uprising), and Jennifer Flackett (Big Mouth).
