Ryan Reynolds wants to get original X-Men stars James Marsden and Halle Berry for Deadpool 3.

Update: While Ryan Reynolds might have wanted them in Deadpool & Wolverine, neither James Marsden nor Halle Berry appeared.

Ryan Reynolds is looking to get yet more classic X-Men stars for Deadpool 3, and now he specifically wants James Marsden and Halle Berry back in costume. According to our trusted and proven sources, Ryan Reynolds wants to boost the X-Men credentials of Deadpool 3 by getting the original Scott Summers aka Cyclops and the original Ororo Munro aka Storm for the film. Given that Ryan Reynolds eventually wore down X-Men superstar Hugh Jackman to the point of reprising Wolverine, it feels like there is a good chance he could make this happen.

Deadpool 3 was recently delayed by several months as part of a sudden and much-discussed change in schedule by Marvel Studios, which also delayed Blade, Fantastic Four, and Avengers: Secret Wars. Presumably, this will give Ryan Reynolds more time to complete his Pokemon-like quest to collect as many X-Men actors as he can for his upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. There have been few plot points announced for Deadpool 3 as of yet, but considering Wade Wilson presumably still has Cable’s time travel technology, having any number of mutant actors show up could be a possibility.

Intriguingly, Ryan Reynolds attempting to bring back X-Men stars Halle Berry and James Marsden brings up a bit of Marvel Comics canon that may or may not be addressed. Within the comics, the time-traveling mutant super-soldier Cable (played by Josh Brolin in Deadpool 2) is canonically Nathan Summers, the son of Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey (played by both Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner). If James Marsden does show up in Deadpool 3 as Cyclops, there is plenty of opportunity for Ryan Reynolds to comment on the familial relationship between X-Men, possibly in a self-aware and snide way.

x-men marvel feature

If Ryan Reynolds does get James Marsden and Halle Berry to reprise their roles, it will be the first time either has appeared as their X-Men characters since 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. In that time-travel-heavy film, Halle Berry appeared as an older version of Storm battling Sentinels in a dark, dystopian future, while James Marsden briefly appeared as Cyclops at the end of the movie in a corrected timeline in which Wolverine was reunited with the original cast. Time travel can get complicated.

Since James Marsden and Halle Berry last appeared as Cyclops and Storm, the roles were been taken up by (respectively) Tye Sheridan and Alexandra Shipp for X-Men: Apocalypse. The latter two returned for X-Men: Dark Phoenix in 2019, which was a massive box office flop and the last X-Men movie prior to 20th Century Fox being acquired by the Walt Disney Company. Now that Disney finally has rights to Marvel Comics’ mutant-related characters, fans have been eager to see how they will be introduced to the MCU and it seems we are starting to get some hints.

If Ryan Reynolds does manage to add James Marsden and Halle Berry to his collection of X-Men for Deadpool 3, there is no telling where he might stop. However, if we get a full reunion, we won’t complain.
