While fans are understandably excited about Ryan Reynolds’ return as Deadpool, there’s another project he’s working on about comedy legend John Candy. The Canadian actor announced via Twitter that he and Colin Hanks are developing a nonfiction film about the late comedian. Candy was known for starring in such films as Planes, Trains & Automobiles, which trended on Twitter ahead of the 4K re-release.

Ryan Reynolds confirmed the news of a John Candy project in a statement sent to People Magazine. The project will be developed under Reynold’s production company, Maximum Effort. John Candy’s daughter, Jennifer Candy, expressed her excitement for the project on Twitter and confirmed her involvement.

Ryan Reynolds previously shared his admiration for the late great John Candy with a tribute montage he’d made on the 25th anniversary of his death in 2019. Of course, Collin’s father, Tom Hanks, had worked with Candy on 1983’s Splash and 1985’s Volunteers. The late comedian died at the age of 43 after suffering a heart attack in May 1994 while filming Wagons East in Durango, Mexico.

The news of Ryan Reynolds developing a John Candy project comes after one of his hit films dominated the streaming charts not long ago. The 1991 comedy Nothing But Trouble broke into the top 10 most-watched films on Hulu charts when it premiered on the streamer. In the comedy, Candy plays a cop who stops Chevy Chase and Demi Moore’s characters from heading on an important trip to Atlanta due to a traffic violation.

Having Ryan Reynolds sphere-head a John Candy project is perfect in many ways. Reynolds, for years, has made audiences laugh with his off-brand humor while being very genuine and heartfelt. While fans may know him most as Deadpool, he’s also starred in projects where he had to flex his comedic and dramatic chops.

It’s also perfect because Ryan Reynolds and John Candy are both respective comedic performers. Funny enough, they both also have a history with sports. Candy was the co-owner of the Toronto Argonauts, while Reynolds is currently the co-owner of the Welsh Football club Wrexham A.F.C.

It’ll be interesting to see what the project explores. Ryan Reynolds may focus on John Candy’s successful collaboration with director John Hughes. The two have collaborated on several projects, including the aforementioned Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Uncle Buck, She’s Having a Baby, and others.

Whatever Reynolds chooses to explore, he’ll definitely pay a lot of respect to John Candy. The late comedian was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 1998 and has a visual arts school in Toronto named after him. Rock band Ween’s 1994 album Chocolate and Cheese heavily paid tribute to the late comedian.

After Ryan Reynolds completes the John Candy documentary, he’ll surely begin work on the recently announced Deadpool sequel featuring the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Reynolds made a splash when he announced the upcoming MCU project on his YouTube channel. The announcement shocked longtime comic book fans who never thought they see Jackman return as the famous X-Men character.
