Ryan Reynolds & Channing Tatum Action Comedy Bidding War Ends With Huge Winner
According to Deadline, Warner Bros came out on top this week in a bidding war for the rights to a new Ryan Reynolds/Channing Tatum action comedy movie called Calamity Hustle. Written by the Nee brothers, Aaron and Adam, Calamity Hustle caused quite an uproar among big bidders for the rights.
Bidding War
While there wasn’t a long list of production companies looking to snag the new movie, those who were in the bidding war were waging war with hefty offers.
Netflix, Amazon, and Warner Bros are the main three that it came down to in the end, and Warner Bros ultimately made the most appealing offer to win the “auction”.
Big Paydays
There is some speculation regarding the package offered by Warner Bros, but sources say the hope is to deliver it all for around $140 million. Both Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum are set to receive a $25 million payday for their parts in the movie.
Likened to the epic and unforgettable cop movies Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, Calamity Hustle is a mismatched buddy action movie starring Ryan Reynolds as a cop who is currently estranged from his brother, Channing Tatum, whose life path led him into a world of crime.
More Ryan Reynolds And Channing Tatum Story
The two had a rough childhood, both dealing with some troublesome issues as children, but they chose to go opposite ways as adults.
When Ryan Reynolds finds out that Channing Tatum has managed to get himself into a dangerous position, it’s his mission to track his brother down before the thieves he ripped off find him first.
Holiday Movie?
Shooting for the movie will be held in New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. The Nee brothers set the movie around the holidays (since it worked so well for Lethal Weapon and Die Hard), and there will be plenty of huge set pieces put together to film the various action scenes.
The director of Napoleon, Kevin Walsh will be producing Calamity Hustle, alongside Channing Tatum and Ryan Reynolds’ own companies, Free Association and Maximum Effort.
Of course, the Nee brothers will also have their hand in the production of the film.
Netflix And Amazon Were In The Mix
Amid the tense bidding war for rights to the movie, there was a time when it looked as though one of the streaming giants (Amazon or Netflix) would snag the win.
Streamers are often willing to pay higher prices for the rights to movies (especially when they come with big stars like Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum), as they don’t have to do as much advertising and campaigning as traditional studios.
However, it seems the game is changing.
Calamity Hustle Could Be A Huge Hit
More filmmakers are working their way back into theatrical releases for their movies. Streaming sites don’t offer the longevity and connection with the story/film that spending time in the theaters does.
A theatrical release “establishes movies in the pop culture”. When movies are released on streaming they are often quickly forgotten and sometimes never discovered at all due to limited awareness of their release.
One thing is certain, a movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum as a duo is going to sell movie tickets.
