Acting is a very lucrative vocation, if you can get yourself into the upper echelons of the industry. Until then, it can be a grind. Because of that, many actors diversify their interests into other business pursuits to ensure an income that is a little more stable. Sometimes, even the most prominent names still show interest in other avenues. Kate Hudson began an athletic brand in 2013 called Fabletics, and Jessica Alba co-founded a line of baby products called The Honest Company. One of the more active actors with side gigs is Ryan Reynolds, who started Aviation Gin and owns 25% of Mint Mobile. Now, his two interests are on a collision course as a new business investment will also put him on screen.
In a new trailer released by FX, Welcome to Wrexham sees Ryan Reynolds and his co-owner Rob McElhenney purchasing the Wrexham football club and attempting to turn it around. While both actors are known for their sarcastic and comedic wit, the trailer shows more of an underdog story with moments of inspirational perseverance. It seems to be a story that is more than an underdog football club; the town of Wrexham looks to be a character of its own and plays a big part in the docuseries moving forward.
It is not unreasonable to ask what an American and a Canadian know about running a Welsh football club. It is easy to compare to the Apple TV series Ted Lasso, which sees an American football coach played by Jason Sudekis travel to London as a fish out of the water to coach an English football team. The success of Ted Lasso can worry people into thinking these two actors are hoping for some positive press and putting the team and community at risk. In a press conference featured in the docuseries, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney explain there was much more to their decision.
Ryan Reynolds described this move as a passion project, feeling that soccer is “gorgeous torture” and that buying the team is the best and worst thing to ever happen to him. Rob McElhenney described a deeper reason for his involvement in the project. He tells about his connection to the game tracing back to his father and how much he loved watching games with him. Regardless of how this project ends for the team, the community, and the actors, they all seem to be in good hands.
Ryan Reynolds is best known for his blockbuster work in Deadpool, The Adam Project, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, and Red Notice. He has brought sarcasm and charisma to the big screen for decades. He committed to taking a break from acting after the release of The Adam Project earlier this year; it seems we know what he is spending his time doing. Rob McElhenney is best known for his time in front of and behind the camera on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In addition to playing Rob for 162 episodes, he is also the writer and creator of the series. Fans will get an opportunity to see both of the actors on FX on August 24.
