As the Marvel Cinematic Universe goes full steam ahead with Phase 4 of its inter-connected storytelling via films and television series, it seems there are very few A-list actors left for Marvel Studios to cast. That being said, Ryan Gosling is one of the few Hollywood superstars yet confirmed to suit up in the MCU. However, Indiewire reports that should he get cast in the MCU, Ryan Gosling wants to play Captain Canada.
Indiewire grabbed the Ryan Gosling scoop from the actor’s interview with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. The interview (which you can see below) is a part of Ryan Gosling’s press duties for his new Netflix action movie, The Gray Man, directed by the Russo Brothers. The Russo’s are obviously well known not only for their pioneering work in sitcoms, directing shows like Arrested Development and Community but for their work directing films in the MCU, from Captain America: Winter Soldier, to Avengers: Endgame. In the Gray Man, Gosling faces off against a villainous Chris Evans, the MCU’s Captain America prior to Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson taking on the role. Naturally, given the Marvel connections between Gosling’s directors, castmates, and the MCU, Horowitz opened up a line of questioning regarding Gosling’s possible involvement in the franchise. First, the MTV News reporter touched base with the popular rumor that Gosling may be cast as the MCU’s Nova, to which Gosling replied: “I don’t know anything about Nova.” However, it would appear he has another character in mind; “I was waiting for the Captain Canada call,” Gosling told Horowitz.
Captain Canada is in fact a comic book character, allegedly originating from a comic book series in the 1970s out of Newfoundland, not by Marvel Comics. Marvel Comics does, however, have a Captain Canada-esque superhero in the form of Guardian aka James MacDonald Hudson, leader of the all-Canadian hero team Alpha Flight. Such a character would seem a good fit for Ryan Gosling, given that he is Canadian, but his quip to Horowitz was definitely in jest and didn’t sound like a serious call to be cast. However, given that GIANT FREAKIN ROBOT recently learned that Gosling has been asking the Russo brothers for an assist into the MCU and a role that he may be interested in playing is Ghost Rider and with the character yet to officially make his bow in the MCU (Agents of Shield’s Robbie Reyes reportedly doesn’t count), Gosling could be the star Marvel needs for the character.
Aside from batting away Nova rumors, pinning after the roles of Captain Canada and Ghost Rider and playing a spy in The Gray Man, Gosling does have another role in the works which stems from a historical piece of pop culture. Starring opposite Margot Robbie as the titular character, Gosling has been cast as Ken in director Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie. The role is a far cry from being a spy, patriotic hero, or hell-infused, flaming skull, motorcycle-riding anti-hero, but nevertheless, Gosling looks the part in every set photo that gets released. However, after Barbie, no doubt fans would love to see Ryan Gosling suiting up in the MCU.
