Russell Crowe Fights Demons And The Vatican In The Pope’s Exorcist, See The Video
Russell Crowe goes to war against a demonic entity in the upcoming exorcism film, The Pope's Exorcist, based on a true story.
“Whatever you do, you only do because God allows it,” these terrifying words uttered by a man of the cloth while speaking to a demon invading the body of a young child are enough to send shivers up the spine of even the most ardent horror fanatics. Exorcism movies are some of the scariest in the genre, and now thanks to reporting by People, we can look forward to adding one more to the list. Russell Crowe looks to have met his match as he stands in front of a demonic rival in s truly terrifying trailer for The Pope’s Exorcist, making it one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2023.
The trailer opens with Crowe’s character making the classic priest walk in a misty haze to where they will battle the demonic entity. The scene gives those fans of The Exorcist a little nostalgia as they remember Max Von Sydow strolling up to the house at the bottom of the stairs. The moment is simple, but it is a telling image of what we can expect from the film advertised in the trailer.
In the next moment of dialogue, Russell Crowe speaks with a Cardinal who points out that the priest recommends 90% of his charges to doctors and psychiatrists, believing they are not demonic possession. The priest states that he would categorize the remaining 2% of his charges as evil. Like in other exorcism movies, the entity Crowe is about to face will almost definitely fall within that other 2%.
Here is the scariest part of the trailer for The Exorcist’s Pope; it is based on the true life experiences of Russell Crowe’s character, Father Gabriele Amorth. Of course, all stories inspired by true events are a little dramatized for the screen, but how much of this film is for the screen and how much is true is anyone’s guess. The film is based on the book Exorcist Tells His Story by Father Amorth himself.
Russell Crowe is best known as Hollywood’s tough guy from the Academy Award-winning film, Gladiator, where he went up against Joaquin Phoenix and defied the Emporer of Rome. He also showed his ability to stretch away from the tough guy persona (he also played one in L.A. Confidential along with Kim Baysinger, Guy Pierce, and Kevin Spacey) when he showed up in another Academy Award-nominated film, A Beautiful Mind. Since then, he has had less success with his film choices.
He has recently been in more critical failures than successes, playing Jor-El in Zack Snyder’s Justice League alongside Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot and Dr. Jekyll in Universal’s failed attempt at a monster universe, the Tom Cruise-led The Mummy. He also appeared in last year’s divisive Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, Thor: Love and Thunder, as Zeus, King of the Gods of Olympus.
Russell Crowe seems to be a hit-and-miss kind of actor in Hollywood. He is either on to the point of turning the heads of Oscar voters or getting destroyed on Rotten Tomatoes. For horror fans everywhere, we are hoping for the former.
