Australian actor Ruby Rose has had a rollercoaster of a career in television and film. Rose gained attention as a model when she was picked to advertise Maybelline New York, leading to her hosting gig on Australia’s Next Top Model. In Australia, she also briefly hosted The Project, a talk show that balances current affairs and news through panel discussions. Since her modeling days, Rose has dabbled in acting, including stints in the third installment of the Pitch Perfect film series and the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. Recently, Rose experienced some blowback after her exit from Batwoman, but it appears she is gearing up for a comeback on the big screen.
According to Deadline, Ruby Rose is set to star in Stowaway from first-time feature film director Declan Whitebloom and first-time writer Ian Hayden. Whitebloom has made a name for himself, directing music videos for Taylor Swift, Rita Ora, and Liam Payne. Also referred to as The Yacht, IMDB describes Stowaway as similar to the Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart film Panic Room but set aboard a yacht where Rose’s character of Bella Denton is held captive by three thieves. The film will costar Patrick Schwarzenegger, Frank Grillo, and Luis Da Silva Jr. as audiences are taken aboard a journey of survival.
Stowaway will be the first significant comeback role for Ruby Rose following her high-profile exit from the CW’s Batwoman. After a series of cameos on other Arrowverse shows like The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl, Rose made her debut as Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, in the titular series in 2019. She played the role in the show’s first season, then surprisingly left the series. According to Entertainment Weekly, Rose claimed at the time of her exit that unsafe working conditions led to her leaving the show by quitting. Still, Warner Bros. Television refuted these claims and noted that Rose’s onset behavior resulted in the producers actually firing the actor. Her contract was not renewed, and Warner Bros. was forced to find creative ways to explain her character’s absence since she was the lead.
At the time of Ruby Rose’s departure from Batwoman, she was playing an openly lesbian superhero, the first for a lead in a superhero television series. Since Rose left the show, her character was replaced with a different character named Ryan Wilder, portrayed in the show by Javicia Leslie. The series ran for a total of three seasons before it was eventually canceled, along with a slew of other Arrowverse shows on the CW, in March 2022. Currently, The Flash remains one of the only holdouts of the Arrowverse not to be taken off the air yet, as it enters its ninth season soon. As for Ruby Rose, Stowaway may be her best bet for a comeback role as her latest effort, Vanquish, has recently netted the star her first ever Worst Actress nomination at the annual Razzie Awards. Rose was also recently featured alongside Taylor Zakhar Perez and Paris Berelc in Kyle Newman’s 1UP, which is currently streaming on Prime Video.
