Rosemary’s Baby Prequel Apartment 7A Reveals Release
Classic horror movie Rosemary’s Baby is getting a prequel more than 50 years after it was released. Apartment 7A will be set justs before Rosemary’s Baby and will focus on the New York apartment that Rosemary Woodhouse and her husband lived in. With a great lead and a talented horror director attached, the prequel may be a worthy successor to Rosemary’s Baby.
Can Apartment 7A Live Up?
Widely considered one of the greatest psychological horror movies of all time, Rosemary’s Baby will be hard for Apartment 7A to live up to. The 1968 movie begins with Rosemary and her husband Guy moving into the Bramford apartment building. But when Rosemary becomes pregnant she starts to suspect their neighbors are a satanic cult interested in her baby. Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes give great performances and Ruth Gordon earned an Oscar for her supporting role.
What Happened Before
As its name would imply, Apartment 7A will explore what happened in Rosemary and Guy’s apartment before the events of Rosemary’s Baby.
The prequel will be set in 1965 and follows a dancer recovering from an injury who moves into the apartment and runs into the dark forces that will later consume Rosemary and her family. It’s likely this dancer’s story that Rosemary and her husband were warned about early in Rosemary’s Baby when they were told about the apartment’s dark past.
Julia Garner In The Lead
Apartment 7A will feature some great talent both on screen and behind the scenes, which is cause for excitement. Julia Garner, of Ozark fame, will be the lead supported by Dianne Wiest, Jim Sturgess, Kevin McNally, Marli Siu, Andrew Buchan, Rosy McEwen, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. Behind the camera, Natalie Eirka James will be directing, her second feature film after the chilling horror movie Relic.
Other Big Names Attached
There are also some big names attached to Apartment 7A as producers.
John Krasinski, Alyson Seeger, Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller are all producers on the film with Vicki Dee Rock and Alexa Ginsburg serving as the film’s executive producers. The legendary status of Rosemary’s Baby likely explains why so many big names were eager to have a hand in the prequel’s production.
Rosemary’s Baby And Roman Polanski
The names attached to Apartment 7A are varied and impressive but, just as noteworthy, is the absence of the original film’s director and writer, the notorious Roman Polanski. Rosemary’s Baby is often cited as one of Polanski’s best movies and he was nominated for an Oscar as the film’s screenwriter.
The disgraced director was convicted of multiple counts of sexual violence against a minor, making his exclusion from the prequel both expected and in the best interest of the film.
Meeting Audience Expectations
Prequels to iconic movies often struggle to live up to the original material, but with a stellar cast and a talented, if untested, director Apartment 7A may be one of the rare follow-ups to meet audiences’ high expectations.
The horror prequel, decades in the making, is being produced by Paramount Studios for their streaming service. The film doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s set to be released this fall exclusively on Paramount+.
