Rosario Dawson made a strong impression as Ahsoka Tano on the latest episode of The Mandalorian. The fan-favorite character made the leap from animation to live-action and the response seems to be overwhelmingly positive, with Ahsoka’s episode “The Jedi” receiving the highest rating on IMDb of any Mandalorian episode. It certainly looks like Star Wars fans want more live-action Ahsoka Tano, and it sounds like they are going to get exactly that.
We had heard that Disney wanted to bring Rosario Dawson back for a Star Wars movie surrounding Ahsoka Tano, but it looks like the popularity of the character and Dawson’s performance of her has catapulted her into getting her own Disney+ series. Insider Daniel Richtman (via We Got This Covered) is reporting that Disney is moving forward with an Ahsoka Tano television series for Disney+ and Dawson will once again star as the Jedi. Along with the Boba Fett miniseries, it sounds like Season 2 of The Mandalorian is proving to be a great source of spinoff material.
Rosario Dawson had a lot of fan anticipation built up around her as Ahsoka Tano. The role had only ever been seen in animated shows and ancillary Star Wars material. Dawson would be the first actor to embody the character of Ahsoka Tano in live-action, and would probably be the first version of the character many mainstream Star Wars fans were ever exposed to. The fact that her appearance has gone over so well is immensely rewarding for both her and the Star Wars fan community.
If Disney is planning to give Rosario Dawson her own Disney+ series as Ahsoka Tano, it could also mean that this is how we end up getting Grand Admiral Thrawn in live-action as well. Fans are being rewarded for their long-term love of these characters, and seeing them brought to the live-action Star Wars universe – which legitimizes them in the eyes of the wider pop culture – is one of the most exciting things to happen in the property for a while.
There are definitely questions to ask about this potential Ahsoka Tano Disney+ series. Would it be a one-off miniseries like the Boba Fett show is reported to be? Or does Disney foresee turning Rosario Dawson into one of the new faces of the Star Wars franchise? Could she end up anchoring a longer ongoing live-action show? If Disney had The Mandalorian running at one point in the year and the Ahsoka Tano show at another point, it could keep Star Wars vibrant in the pop culture discussion without the need to release full-fledged films for a while.
We definitely hope this news is on the mark and we can look forward to seeing Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano in her own series. Would Ahsoka’s co-creator Dave Filoni be the showrunner of such a series? He is very protective of the character – he wrote and directed “The Jedi” episode of The Mandalorian – and it would be awesome to see what he and Dawson could do with their own series. We will keep our eyes and ears peeled for more news about this project.
