The actress took a lot of the blame on herself, saying she felt embarrassed. If Rosamund Pike could make the movie today, she would do it very differently.

Today, Rosamund Pike is known for her role in Gone Girl and her upcoming part in The Wheel of Time. Both of which are stories adapted from novels. However, all these years later, audiences are still talking about a role from her early career in a video game adaptation where she co-starred with Karl Urban and Dwayne Johnson. Doom was a video game adaptation from 2005 that is often referenced when talking about how terrible video game movies can be. So what went wrong with Doom? When asked about it recently by Collider, the actress took a lot of the blame on herself, saying she felt embarrassed. If Rosamund Pike could make the movie today, she would do it very differently.
I feel partly to blame in that respect because I think I failed just through ignorance and innocence to understand, to fully get a picture of what Doom meant to fans at that point. I wasn’t a gamer. I didn’t understand. If I knew what I knew now, I would have dived right into all of that and got fully immersed in it like I do now. And I just didn’t understand. I feel embarrassed, really. I feel embarrassed that I was sort of ignorant of what it meant and I didn’t know how to go about finding out because the internet wasn’t the place it is now for the fans to speak up. I wouldn’t have known where to find them. I do now! In fact, I now have many friends who were massive fans of the game and I just wish I had known them then.

How badly did Doom fail? It was pretty rough. The movie reportedly had a budget of $60 million to $70 million. Its box office take was $58.7 million. This was a big early failure in the movie careers of both Rosamund Pike and Dwayne Johnson.
As Collider points out, there were other failures when it came to Doom. For example, the marketing for the movie heavily promoted Dwayne Johnson’s role. However, Karl Urban was the main character, and Dwayne Johnson was actually the story’s villain. This set up expectations for the movie that confused audiences when they finally saw the film, which could have contributed to why it has a 34% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Rosamund Pike shared that she has regrets and wishes she had researched the story more and understood the needs of the fandom, but she didn’t detail how that would have changed her performance. It’s safe to bet that she knows some things she could do differently now since she’s been in so many more adaptations.
These regrets are possibly a good sign for The Wheel of Time, since what she said heavily suggests that she has researched what it is fans of the novels by Robert Jordan want to see in the upcoming television series. In fact, many reports from Rosamund Pike’s new series have indicated that the show is taking its source material very seriously. Robert Jordan, the original author of The Wheel of Time novels has unfortunately passed away. However, fantasy author Brandon Sanderson wrote the final three books in his series. Brandon Sanderson has also been working on the new streaming series for Amazon, going so far as to clash with the showrunner over story points to make sure fan expectations are met.
Rosamund Pike’s new series is set to release on Amazon on November 19, 2021. Early scenes from the new series show her as Moiraine Damodred, a powerful wielder of magic in a high fantasy world where only some have magical gifts. She’ll be one of the leads in the epic fantasy series. Expectations from fans are high. Fantasy fans are still hungry for something new and exciting after the end of HBO’s Game of Thrones, and they’re hoping to find it in The Wheel of Time or possibly Amazon’s other upcoming big-budget series, Lord of the Rings. Hopefully, what Rosamund Pike has learned about adaptations and fandoms will serve the new series well.
