The Romantic Teen Comedy Anime That Desperately Needs Season 2
There are many anime series that are never finished, and this is especially true when it comes to Shoujo, which is aimed at young girls. Maid Sama! is one such show. Focusing on a female student council president in a mostly male school who also works in a maid cafe, this story is equally funny and romantic and never got the anime ending it deserved.
Student Council President Works At A Maid Cafe
One of the reasons that Maid Sama! is so popular, despite sounding like a standard romantic comedy, is how many facets there are to the story. Misaki Ayuzawa is working hard as the student council president to make her once all-boys school more accommodating for female students. Many of the other students see her as a boy-hating dictator.
They don’t know that in addition to doing all she can to make the school flourish, she also has a lot on her plate at home. In her free time, she works at a maid cafe to support her mother and sister after their dad left them without a support system.
One Of Anime’s Greatest Romances
Then there’s the actual romance part. While she’s working at the maid cafe one day, Takumi Usui finds out her secret and starts to pay her more attention as he becomes interested in her and her life.
Unlike many romances, Maid Sama! doesn’t have a long and drawn-out love story. Misaki and Takumi end up together pretty early on. What they have to do to grow and support each other after they’re dating, such as handling their significantly different social standings, takes up most of the story.
Never Finished The Story
Maid Sama! is based on a manga written by Hiro Fujiwara, featuring 18 volumes. The anime adaptation came out in 2010. It only made it one season, covering roughly 36 chapters of the manga in its 26 episodes.
This means that you could consider the Maid Sama! anime finished, as this is about where the two characters get together. However, those who have read the manga realize that there is a lot more to the story than a first kiss.
Iconic Shonen Voice Actors
J.C. Staff (Toradora!, Food Wars) was in charge of the anime, with Hiroaki Sakurai (Mushishi, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.) in charge of directing the series. Nobuhiko Okamoto (Assassination Classroom, My Hero Academia) and Ayumi Fujimura (The Garden of Sinners, Natsume’s Book of Friends) play the main characters with a supporting cast including Kenichi Suzumura (Accel World, Fairy Tail), Kousuke Toriumi (Hakouki, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind), and Hiromi Igarashi (Overlord, High School Fleet).
There’s Still Hope For More
Despite the extensive source material and the fact that fans are still waiting, it doesn’t look like a Season 2 of Maid Sama! will ever come. Some anime have gotten a new season on the brink of death, such as Black Butler, which got a fourth season after a decade, but with 14 years having passed since Season 1 aired, it’s not looking good.
Popular Over A Decade Later
It’s more likely that the show will get a complete reboot, if anything. No matter how it happens, Maid Sama! deserves a continuation of some kind. Despite coming out in 2010, it’s still a very popular series. It has an average score of 8 on My Anime List, ranking it #634. However, its popularity is pretty high, ranked #107 out of all anime.

REVIEW SCORE
I agree with the average user here, as I’d easily give Maid-Sama! a 4 out of 5. It’s a cute series with enough unique elements to stand out from other high-school romance animes.
All 26 episodes of Maid Sama! are available to watch on Hulu. While it’s not a complete story, the animation is fun and is perfect for those thinking about reading the manga. And who knows, there may be a Season 2… eventually.
