Netflix Sci-Fi Robot Thriller Turns Parenting Into Horror

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

We are currently living in a golden age of sci-fi, but it can be difficult to find the true gems hidden amid the myriad sequels, prequels, and revivals of existing properties. Fortunately, we’re here to bring you the good stuff so all you have to do is sit back and hit “play.” In this case, the movie we’re recommending is I Am Mother, an unforgettable cyberpunk film that you can now stream on Netflix.

Earth Is A Wasteland In I Am Mother

What is I Am Mother about? It’s a post-apocalyptic tale about the seeming desire to repopulate the Earth. To this end, we follow a girl named Daughter, who is raised in a bunker by a robot named Mother.

It is admittedly difficult to watch I Am Mother and not think about the recent Fallout television series. After all, our main character lives in a bunker meant to survive an event that nearly renders humanity extinct. Furthermore, drama kicks into high gear when an outsider comes into the Vault … er, bunker with stories about the awful wasteland planet Earth has become, one in which robots like Mother hunt humans down.

A Deadly Serious Premise

Tonally, however, we’re happy to report that I Am Mother takes its premise very seriously. A major part of the Fallout show’s appeal is that it has a goofy and demented sense of humor that makes it easy for characters and audiences alike to grin through the apocalypse. By contrast, I Am Mother keeps things deadly serious, meaning that we share in the main character’s terror as she ponders that the nurturing Mother robot who has been raising her might be the same kind of robot that is hunting humans down, Terminator-style, on the surface.

Clara Rugaard Is Daughter

Depending on how international your cinematic tastes are, you may not recognize the Daughter character in I Am Mother. She is very capably played by Clara Rugaard, a young actor known for her appearances in Teen Spirit and Press Play. Others in the film include some more familiar faces, including Hilary Swank as Woman (a reluctant visitor inside the bunker), and Rose Byrne (who provides the voice for the titular robot in I Am Mother).

A Critical Hit

If you’re still on the fence about watching I Am Mother, this may sway you: the movie is a genuine critical darling that has a whopping 89 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics generally lauded the film for telling an ambitious story and managing to stick a very tricky landing. On top of that, they praised the film for being suspenseful, intelligent, and well-acted, all of which add up to make a sci-fi film that we frankly can’t wait to watch again.

I Am Mother Streaming On Netflix

Of course, if you’re a longtime sci-fi fan, you know the drill by now. Just because we loved it and critics raved about it doesn’t mean that you’re automatically going to be a fan. The best thing to do is experience I Am Mother yourself by streaming it on Netflix today. Trust us: by the time the credits roll, you might not be nearly as friendly to all the talking tech inside your house.
