Robert Downey Jr. has yet to find another big-ticket role since he made his departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame. Fans have been hoping to see him land a really sizable and high-profile role now that his tenure with Marvel seems to have come to a close. He is set to star in a third Sherlock Holmes movie but there is little else on the horizon for the prominent actor. Well, it turns out that he is being eyed for a brand new film from Netflix that could be right up his alley.
According to our trusted inside source – the same one that provided Giant Freakin Robot with confirmed exclusive scoops regarding Chloe Bennet returning as Quake for a new Marvel series and Don Cheadle appearing as War Machine in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier – Robert Downey Jr. has been offered the lead role in Here Comes the Flood, a bank heist thriller from writer Simon Kinberg. It should be noted that Kinberg wrote the first Sherlock Holmes movie, so he does have a connection to the mega-star. The story of the film would see an Iraqi war vet landing a job at a bank. An international thief approaches him to help strategize and enact a heist in the bank. However, the veteran is in love with one of the bank employees and they plan to manufacture a double-cross that will see them getting away with the money and leaving the thief to take the blame.
As of now, Robert Downey Jr. is being sought to play the international thief. It is a role that seems tailor-made to play to the actor’s charismatic and debonair qualities. The role sounds like it needs to involve someone with a lot of charm and the ability to come across as a seasoned professional. That definitely sounds like the kind of part that would fit perfectly with the rest of the actor’s body of work. And it would certainly lend an air of expertise and star quality to the picture. Frankly, it’s the kind of role that is tough to see anyone but Robert Downey Jr. in once you have heard his name attached to it.
Here Comes the Flood is listed as being in pre-production on IMDb, so we have to wonder if Robert Downey Jr. has already signed on the dotted line or if negotiations and scheduling are still underway. There are still some pivotal roles left to cast – including the other two lead characters – but being able to announce that Robert Downey Jr. has attached himself to your movie gives you a lot of negotiating power and will drive up interest almost instantly. It would put a ton of eyes on the project and could easily act as a way to attract other high-profile talents.
Seeing Robert Downey Jr. headline a Netflix film will definitely help show how the streaming giant is entering the big leagues when it comes to their film productions. They are already planning to release a star-studded blockbuster later this year with Red Notice. With the once and future Tony Stark at the forefront of Here Comes the Flood, you can guarantee it will get audiences to pay attention.
