Exclusive: Robert Downey Jr Wants A Spider-Man 4 Cameo
Robert Downey Jr. is looking to making a cameo appearance in Spider-Man 4.
He was there in the beginning and now he’s hoping for another appearance, albeit a brief one. Our trusted and proven sources have informed us that Robert Downey Jr. is hoping to make a cameo in Spider-Man 4. Assuming he doesn’t make any MCU appearances between then and now, it will potentially be Downey’s 11th appearance in a Marvel movie as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.
Downey’s signature character sacrificed himself in the battle against the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) in the 2019 event film Avengers: Endgame, which would call into question exactly how Robert Downey Jr. could make any kind of appearance in Spider-Man 4. Regardless it’s probably a safe bet that, if given the opportunity, Sony‘s filmmakers would bend over backward to get Downey a chance to reprise his iconic role. If nothing else, one option is that Downey could appear in a flashback scene set before his fateful confrontation with Thanos.
Another way to potentially bring Robert Downey Jr. back for Spider-Man 4 is the same way so many deceased villains returned for 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home — Marvel’s Multiverse. Rather than appearing as Iron Man of the prime MCU, he could star as variant from an alternate universe. Perhaps he could even play the snowy-armored Superior Iron Man who many erroneously speculated Tom Cruise would play in last year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
As to when we might see Robert Downey Jr. make his appearance in Spider-Man 4, that’s another question entirely. At the end of December, Sony film boss Tom Rothman confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the fourth Tom Holland led Spider-Man film was on the way, while at the same time making it clear he wasn’t sure when he or anyone else at the studio would be able to offer a release date.
There are a number of things that could potentially be holding up the production of the next Spider-Man movie. During both the promotional lead-up to No Way Home and afterward, Tom Holland took a number of interviews in which he cast doubt on the prospect of doing another Spider-Man film; without ever going so far as to rule out the possibility altogether. Then there’s the fact that one of the most important people to contribute to the success of the Holland-led Spidey films, Jon Watts, has since stepped away from superhero fare and is now working on the upcoming Star Wars series Skeleton Crew.
Robert Downey Jr.’s return for Spider-Man 4 would be fitting since his character was so integral to bringing Peter Parker into the MCU. It’s Tony Stark who recruits Spider-Man into his side of the conflict in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, and it was Downey who made a major appearance in Holland’s first solo film, 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
