Rick and Morty fans have been waiting for the better part of a year now to get the next season of the misadventures of the titular duo and the rest of their family. First announced in July of last year, the fifth season of the show didn’t have a definitive timeline, something that’s been the case in the past with sporadic release schedules for the show. But now you can feast your eyes on this next season premiere for a show which has become a fan favorite over its first four seasons.

Cartoon Network and Adult Swim made the Rick and Morty Season 5 premiere available for everyone on YouTube and the 22-minute episode is already pushing towards 1.5 million views. With sometimes unclear timelines around release schedules, it’s never been a sure thing that we would get a Rick and Morty return within a year of the previous season ending. But it looks like they pulled it off and this next season starts off with a bang.
Rick and Morty Season 5 is set to handle continued themes around stability, masculinity, family, and even morality as they further develop the different characters. Last season made it clear they were no longer propping Rick up as a running meme gag, but rather wanted to, for sure, layout the idea that he just isn’t a good guy. That being said, they worked to have him reconcile some of the things he’s done in the past, showing some moderate regret for how he handled the Beth and Clone-Beth situation. It was revealed that he purposefully undid his memories in order to not know the difference between the two. Could this next season continue to build on the Rick arc, humanizing him just a bit more?
And Morty, from even the first moments of this Rick and Morty Season 5 premiere, is still a long-suffering and tragic character. In that way, little has changed though they continue to explore the moral and ethical arc for both. This next season could continue to show Morty’s growth, even beginning to have him further find an identity beyond his relationship with his grandfather.
Rick and Morty Season 5 premieres more than seven years after the show originally released on Cartoon Network as part of their Adult Swim lineup. It’s hilarious, and a very mature show that follows the misadventures of the titular characters as they live dual lives. There’s the nuclear family version, but that’s mixed up with the interdivisional travel version as well with Rick constantly using his genius for all the wrong reasons. And with that, he drags along the unsuspecting and impressionable Rick along for the proverbial ride.
And Rick and Morty Season 5 is looking to follow up on another award turn season from last time around. The show took home the Outstanding Animated Program Award for the second year in a row solidifying it, critically, as one of the best animated shows around. Considering the tone, it’s an incredible feat and a testament to what Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon have created.
