Rick And Morty Canceled After Major Scandal?
As more fans condemn Rick and Morty following the felony charges against the series' co-creator, the chances of cancelation are high.
The news just keeps getting worse for Rick and Morty fans. Last week, co-creator Justin Roiland was charged with two counts of felony, and now the writer and voice actor has gone viral on Twitter after screenshots that show him engaging in a sexual conversation with a minor were released. After the controversy caused by the Rick and Morty creator, fans wonder if the animated comedy might get canceled.
Co-creator of the Adult Swim animated comedy and voice actor for the two titular characters Rick and Morty, Justin Roiland, was arrested and charged with two counts of felony in Orange County last week. He was charged with one count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit in a case involving an unnamed woman Roiland allegedly dated in 2020. Roiland was released on a $50,000 bond and attended a pre-trail on January 12, with a hearing scheduled later this spring on April 27.
No trial has been scheduled for Roiland as of yet. However, many of the creator’s fans were shocked at how the incident managed to remain out of the public eye for almost three years. Meanwhile, Roiland has continued to build a successful career for himself by creating hit shows like Rick and Morty and Hulu’s Solar Opposites while simultaneously keeping certain skeletons hidden deep within his closet.
Recently, another, even older skeleton has managed to make its way into the public eye through screenshots that have been posted on social media, showing the creator using extremely foul and sexual language while conversing with a teenage girl.
In the text messages, which are time-stamped to have taken place in October 2015, the Rick and Morty creator allegedly sent the 16–year-old fan a series of racist slurs and offensive language after the girl complained that it was late and she has school the next day. Roiland then says that the teenager should run away and go into “sex slavery” before calling her names using more offensive language. He followed up the series of texts with a simple “jk,” implying that he was kidding the whole time.
More screenshots were released with Roiland continuing to call the young fan names, using foul language and suggesting sexual careers for the teenager once she turned 18 and calling her “jailbait.” The screenshots have caused an uproar on the internet, and fans are now calling for the cancelation of Rick and Morty.
In 2013, Roiland teamed up with Community creator Dan Harmon to create the science-fiction animated comedy two years before the text conversation allegedly took place. Since Roiland is both a creator of the show and voices both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, aka the two main characters, it seems that disconnecting Roiland from the series would be impossible, and fans are opting to completely disregard the series’ existence instead.
Rick and Morty just completed the ending of the sixth season of the series in December 2022, wrapping up 61 out of a 70-episode order. With at least nine more episodes of the series in contract, it is unclear at this time whether Adult Swim will choose to continue with the seventh season or end the show now.
