Richard Gere in The Hoax

Richard Gere has been in plenty of classic films, but his work output also means that some of his films might get overlooked. The acclaimed actor recently spoke to Comicbook.com about his upcoming rom-com Maybe I Do and mentioned that some of his more underrated films from his career are The Hoax and Time Out of Mind. In regards to The Hoax, Gere said “It’s a really good film and for whatever reason it just didn’t break through.”

Richard Gere certainly isn’t wrong about the latter half of his statement. While The Hoax received critical praise, it was largely ignored by audiences only getting $11.7 million at the box office against a budget of $25 million. The 2006 film was based on the book by Clifford Irving that told the real-life story of a hoax Irving set up involving a fake Howard Hughes autobiography.

It’s surprising that The Hoax was such a box office flop, considering the interesting subject matter and stacked cast. The film starred Richard Gere as Irving and also starred Alfred Molina, Marcia Gay Harden, Hope Davis, Julie Delpy, and Stanley Tucci. The film was directed by Lasse Hallstrom with a screenplay from William Wheeler.

Richard Gere’s second pick, Time Out of Mind, is even less financially successful. The 2014 film only managed to bring in $314,000 at the global box office. The film follows a homeless man who tried to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter.

Time Out of Mind was directed and written by Oren Moverman, based on a story by Jeffrey Caine. Along with Richard Gere, the film starred Ben Vereen, Jena Malone, Steve Buscemi, Jeremy Strong, Kyra Sedgwick, and more. Time Out of Mind also received pretty good reviews, but just wasn’t seen by many people.

Hopefully, more people will tune in for Richard Gere’s next film Maybe I Do, which you can see in theaters this weekend. Maybe I Do follows a couple who wants their parents to meet. The only problem is, the parents already know each other very well since they’ve been having affairs with each other.

Maybe I Do is directed and written by Michael Jacobs. It stars Richard Gere along with Diane Keaton, Emma Roberts, Luke Bracey, and William H. Macy. We haven’t seen Gere in a project since the 2019 TV miniseries MotherFatherSon, and we haven’t seen him in a film since 2017’s Three Christs.

If you want to see Richard Gere’s most underrated films (according to him), both Time Out of Mind and The Hoax are available to stream online. If you want to check out Time Out of Mind, you can watch the film for free on Tubi. As for The Hoax, you’ll need to get a subscription to Starz or rent the film through a streaming platform.

Of course, if you want to see a new Richard Gere film you should check out Maybe I Do this weekend. Also, be on the lookout for his upcoming projects The Making Of and Longing. We’ll keep you updated on these and all other Gere-related projects.
