Rian Johnson might be the most controversial Star Wars director ever. The man was responsible for Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, which was met with some harsh criticisms over the years. Recently, the man expressed that he was more proud of the film now than when he had initially made it. You have to hand it to the man; he does stick by his own work. Even though his film was clearly more experimental than most, he was given the option to create his own trilogy. Although he is currently busy with Knives Out, he plans to continue his Star Wars journey. According to Johnson, “It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn’t get back in that sandbox at some point.”

Rian Johnson also expressed that he has stayed close with current Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, which would likely be why he is planning to make his trilogy. Kennedy commented on Johnson eventually making that trilogy that was promised to him some years back. According to Kennedy, “Rian had such a gigantic success with Knives Out that he’s very committed to try and get that done. So it’ll be a while.” As previously mentioned, Johnson is currently working on the Knives Out franchise, something that Kennedy also commented on. The director has two sequels for that franchise being worked on. The first is called Glass Onion, which has been given a December release date, and the third is going to be coming out within the next two years, we would assume. Johnson clearly does not have the time to work on a full Star Wars trilogy.

To be quite honest, we don’t think that The Last Jedi was that terrible of a film. We can appreciate that a director was wanting to take the traditional Star Wars plotline and turn it on its head. Although the film was critically panned and audiences joined in on the hate for the film, we can see there was more going on with what Rian Johnson was attempting to accomplish. We are not sure where he would take his own trilogy, but we hope it would be something that doesn’t directly link into the Skywalker Saga. Fans have been clamoring for someone to tackle The Old Republic era, and we would hope that Johnson might visit that in his trilogy.

Although Rian Johnson might be busy for the next few years while working on the Knives Out franchise, we would hope within five we could be seeing some movement on the Star Wars front. Taika Waititi is another director that has been linked to making a new Star Wars film, but that hasn’t quite transpired just yet. Rather, we don’t know any details about when he will be doing so. What we do know is that Waititi is going to have his own solo movie for now, so it might not have anything to do with Johnson’s apparent trilogy.

Star Wars has been built with so much lore and thousands of years of history and storylines, that Rian Johnson might be able to do something no one has done yet. He might even think of taking things back further in history and showing how the Sith and Jedi came about in the first place. That story would certainly be worth an entire trilogy. Hold tight everyone, it seems like it will be a few years at least until Johnson starts making moves on this trilogy.
