Rian Johnson Doesn’t Know What To Do With His Hit Franchise
Rian Johnson’s Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, is already a smash, and it hasn’t even hit streaming platforms yet. In a new strategy by Netflix, the streaming giant experimented with releasing the second Knives Out movie in theaters first before making it available in their online catalog. After a box office success and critical praise, fans are already wondering when the third film might be released, however, according to an interview with ComicBook.com, writer and director Rian Johnson isn’t even sure where the series is going yet.
Rian Johnson should be clapping himself on the back for the success of the sequel to his murder mystery film, Knives Out. While Netflix hasn’t released box office numbers, the film is expected to have made $15 million in its first week, almost doubling its $8 million goal, and it is receiving high praise from audience members and critics alike. After receiving such good reception, it’s no wonder that fans are wondering when the already-announced third film will be released.
The producer of the series, Ram Bergman, discussed with ComicBook.com how the first film was an idea that brewed in Rian Johnson’s mind for years before Knives Out was finally written in January 2018. They produced the film that same year, wrapping production in December, and it was released in November 2019. While less than two years is a much quicker timeline than most Hollywood films get, the process wasn’t as easy for the sequel, Glass Onion.
Ram Bergman revealed that Rian Johnson didn’t have a great idea for the second Knives Out movie, and it took him months to process a new story. It seems that Johnson is in the same boat for the threequel, as the writer and director admitted that he has no idea what the next mystery is about. Johnson said that he doesn’t want to give himself a deadline to complete the script because he knows that he wouldn’t be able to meet it anyway.
At the moment, Knives Out 3 is expected to be released sometime in 2024, but that could change if Johnson doesn’t figure out what the next Detective Benoit Blanc mystery is going to be. To get inspired, Johnson says that he turns to Agatha Christie’s novels to come up with plots that not only surprise the audience but also surprise him. Once Rian Johnson finds his muse, we are sure that Knives Out 3 will be just as witty, funny, and full of surprising twists as its two predecessors are.
Both of the released Knives Out films were written and directed by Rian Johnson and star Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc. Knives Out also stars Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Alongside Craig in the sequel, Glass Onion also stars Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, and the Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista, who also worked with Craig on the 007 film Spectre.
Glass Onion is currently in theaters and will be available to stream on December 23.
