By Douglas Helm | Published

A brief but terrifying teaser trailer for the upcoming Return to Silent Hill dropped and it gives us a look at Jeremy Irvine’s James Sunderland along with the horrifying Pyramid Head. The trailer also gives us a glimpse at the Nurses. The film is an adaptation of the popular Silent Hill 2 game, and it looks like it will at least be making a faithful attempt at bringing that game to the screen.

Return to Silent Hill is directed by Christophe Gans, who directed the 2006 film Silent Hill.

Return to Silent Hill follows James Sunderland, who finds himself back in the town of Silent Hill when he receives a letter from his lost love (Hannah Emily Anderson). While searching for her, he must face terrifying threats and discover what happened to transform the town into a palace of pure evil. The game the film is based on is revered as one of the most atmospheric and psychologically scary horror games of all time, so it’ll be interesting to see if the movie can live up to these lofty standards.

Return to Silent Hill is directed by Christophe Gans, who directed the 2006 film Silent Hill. Gans also co-wrote the script with Sandra Vo-Anh and William Josef Schneider. Victor Hadida produces under his David Films banner, and Molly Hassell and David Wulf produce under their Hassell Free Productions banner.

Return to Silent Hill being made now definitely isn’t random, as the movie coincides with the upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2

Christophe Gans exited the film series after the release of Silent Hill, which adapted the first game, and MJ Bassett took over to direct 2012’s Silent Hill: Revelation. Rather than adapt the second game in the franchise, the film opted to make a direct sequel to the first film and was lambasted by critics and fans of the game. With that being said, the 2006 film didn’t fare much better critically, so it’s not too surprising it has taken this long for Return to Silent Hill to come to fruition.

Now is also the best time to take a chance on a video game adaptation like Return to Silent Hill, as video game movies and TV shows are the latest hot Hollywood trend.

Return to Silent Hill being made now definitely isn’t random, as the movie coincides with the upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2, which is being developed by Bloober Team and published by Konami. The Silent Hill 2 remake is set for an October 8, 2024, release date and will be available for the PlayStation 5 and Windows. The film also has a release window set for this year, so perhaps it’ll be released before or around the same time as the game to drum up hype.

Return to Silent Hill

Now is also the best time to take a chance on a video game adaptation like Return to Silent Hill, as video game movies and TV shows are the latest hot Hollywood trend. Thanks to the acclaim of projects like The Last of Us, Fallout, and The Super Mario Bros Movie, studios are more willing to dip into the video game well. Even less critically acclaimed efforts like Five Nights at Freddy’s have managed to scare up decent box office hauls.

It remains to be seen if Return to Silent Hill will be able to ride this trend. It’s also possible it could go the way of its previous films, but maybe the game remake will help boost interest. Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you updated on a release date and other Silent Hill franchise news.
