Reese Witherspoon Is Ready With An Iconic Dress If You Get Married
Reese Witherspoon kept the wedding dress from Sweet Home Alabama.
For every forgotten, underwhelming romantic comedy, there’s a whole cast and crew full of people who put their heart and soul into it. One great example of this is the 2002 movie Sweet Home Alabama, which only has a 38% rating on RottenTomatoes because critics considered it just another bog-standard romantic comedy. But according to MovieWeb, the film meant a lot to Reese Witherspoon, however, so she kept the wedding dress that she wore during the movie’s finale.
The 2002 movie follows a young woman named Melanie Smooter (played by Reese Witherspoon) who returns to her hometown in rural Alabama to finalize her divorce before marrying again in New York. As is often the case with romantic comedies, Smooter eventually discovers that she still loves her former husband and decides at the last minute that she really should be with him — often in the most dramatic way possible.
True to form, the final scene of Sweet Home Alabama features Reese Witherspoon running through the rain in the wedding dress, in search of her ex-husband after abandoning her fiance at the altar. Witherspoon said that the scene felt like a “crazy, amazing moment” that she’d remember forever, so she kept the dress as a memento. She still has the dress to this day.
By the time Sweet Home Alabama came out, Reese Witherspoon was already famous for her work in Legally Blonde, which would go on to spawn a sequel, a musical, and a direct-to-video spinoff, with a third movie on the way. Her name helped draw in audiences, and she continued to star in romantic comedies throughout the years, appearing in such films as Just Like Heaven, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Four Christmases.
However, despite the prevalence of her name in the romantic comedy genre, Reese Witherspoon defied typecasting. Along with her romantic comedies, Witherspoon has starred in the 2007 thriller Rendition, played Johnny Cash’s wife in Walk the Line, and played a deputy district attorney in the comedic crime drama Inherent Vice.
These days, Reese Witherspoon seems to be spending most of her time working at her spends most of her time heading her production company, Hello Sunshine, which focuses on producing films created by women. The company, which sold for $900 million in 2021, has produced such films as Gone Girl, Where the Crawdads Sing, and Something from Tiffanies. The company is also creating an adaptation of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, along with the Amazon Prime shows All Stars and Daisy Jones & The Six.
Despite her role as a producer, Reese Witherspoon hasn’t abandoned her acting career. She has most recently starred in the Netflix romantic comedy Your Place or Mine, and has also been in the TV series Little Fires Everywhere and lent her voice to the animated film Sing 2 as the character Rosita. In addition, she has been cast in several upcoming projects, including the live-action fantasy movie Tinker Bell, an untitled Will Ferrell comedy, a show called Tiny Trailblazers, and Legally Blonde 3.
