Audiences have waited so long for Black Widow. It’s hard to believe we’re finally getting a closer look at the movie to come. So far, we’ve seen the trailers for the movie. This gave us a beautiful look at Budapest, a closer look at the dynamics between Natasha Romanova and her family, and a better idea of this prequel story for our main character. Today, we’re getting a better look at some of our new characters, especially Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. Perhaps unsurprisingly for the character known as Iron Maiden, the woman likes leather. Take a look at her new poster below.
Even without seeing Black Widow first, this paints a clear picture that Rachel Weisz was a great choice for a character so closely tied to Scarlett Johansson. Seriously, take a look at Natasha Romanova’s poster below. They clearly went for the same outfits, same weapons, and a similar power pose.
These character posters definitely wanted us to make the connection between Black Widow and Rachel Weisz’s character and they did the job well. This is better defined when you take a look at the other character posters. In the Tweet below, you can see that Florence Pugh, is carrying a similar weapon but wearing a white outfit all her own. Previous character posters for Black Widow have shown Scarlett Johansson in a white outfit as well, so this newly released poster feels like it’s really set up to draw a connection between Weisz and Johansson.
These posters, and the trailer, have raised questions about how Black Widow will be handling Rachel Weisz’s character. In the comics, Melina Vostokoff is Iron Maiden. She’s actually frequently been an enemy of Natasha Romanova’s. In the trailer, we saw Florence Pugh, Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour sitting at a table together for a meal. They looked like a family. Then, Alexei, played by David Harbour, said, “Listen to your mother”. This has left a lot of questions for many. The trailer presents the four of them as a nuclear family. Is the movie going to change their stories so they’re blood-related? Are they going to be more of a spiritual family, like the Avengers themselves?
These posters, and the way Rachel Weisz and Scarlett Johansson so clearly look like mother and daughter, press those questions further. The quotes IMDb has for her character all make her sound like a nagging mother. We’ll likely have to wait until the movie comes out to get a clearer picture on how the Marvel Cinematic Universe plans to write these family dynamics they’re playing up in their marketing materials.
It’s good to see Rachel Weisz on a movie poster again. Hopefully, joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe will mean more roles in her future. Hollywood has a history of making women uncomfortable, especially when they pass 40 years old, but 51-year-old Rachel Weisz is certainly rocking the leather in her movie poster and seems ready to play the role of a comic book action hero. Severe cheekbones, weapons ready… hopefully this means there will be more for her character than the “nagging mother” lines they’ve shared for her character so far.
