A Sequel To A Ryan Reynolds Movie Is Trending On Netflix
R.I.P.D. 2 is currently trending on Netflix.
Ryan Reynolds may be one of the surest things at the box office with Deadpool and The Hitman’s Bodyguard and in streaming with Red Notice and The Adam Project, but he hasn’t always been that as he has a few skeletons in his filmography closet. Of course, one film that he gets a lot of flack for, and even pokes fun at himself with multiple references in his Deadpool film, is his turn as Hal Jordan, AKA Green Lantern; but one film that flies under the radar is one of the biggest flops of all time, R.I.P.D. But you know Hollywood, a massive flop is no reason not to do a sequel, and a sequel to his undead police force film, R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned, is now killing it on Netflix, according to Flix Patrol.
R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned was released on the streamer on November 15th and landed the number three spot in the top ten; then, on November 16th, it retained the spot before jumping up to number two on November 18th. Of course, a new film is bound to draw some interest at the beginning before it starts to taper off, and it looks to be already doing that as it dropped to number five on the streamer on November 19th and finally dropped more to number seven on November 20th.
Netflix is notorious for having smash hits that take the world by storm for a short time before dropping off into obscurity, such as Red Notice, Extraction, The Grey Man, and The Old Guard.
R.I.P.D., the Dark Horse comic book, follows Nick Cruz, a man who an unknown assailant murders at the height of his personal and professional career, who trades 100 years of service to the Rest In Peace Department. In exchange for them allowing him to investigate his own murder, he will serve the undead police that answers to the man upstairs; unfortunately for him, the investigation will take him to the gates of Hell. R.I.P.D. changed the protagonist’s name to Nick Walker (which makes sense because Ryan Reynolds isn’t Latino), and R.I.P.D. 2 creates a new character altogether.
The sequel swapped out Ryan Reynolds with another actor with a minor name but a similar level of talent, Jeffrey Donovan, playing Roy Pulsipher, an Old West sheriff resurrected to save humanity from a portal to Hell opening. R.I.P.D. 2 also stars Rachel Adedeji (Hollyoaks), Penelope Mitchell (Hellboy, Star Trek: Picard), Richard Brake (Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Mandolorian), and Jake Choi (Single Parents, Succession).
Donovan has most recently been seen on Law & Order as Detective Frank Cosgrove, leading the newest crop of detectives in the long-running police procedural, but he is probably best known as Michael Westin on the USA production of Burn Notice.
R.I.P.D. 2 may be one of the most watched movies on Netflix in the last week, but there is no indication that it will be nothing but sheer curiosity to see what they did with the popular Dark Horse comic. As it already starts to fall down the ranking in its first week of availability, it seems the sequel will have the same fate as its predecessor.
