Almost two weeks after its 2021 cinematic release, A Quiet Place II is still doing well at the box office, bringing its earnings to $138 million worldwide. Now, the world brought to life by the film’s star John Krasinski, is officially expanding into an extended universe with A Quiet Place spinoff.
According to Forbes, a new Quiet Place spinoff feature film is already in the early stages of development at Paramount Pictures. The project is set to be directed by Jeff Nichols with March 23, 2023, set aside as a release date.
The Quiet Place spinoff is expected to broaden the landscape already detailed in Krasinski’s first two films and won’t simply be A Quiet Place III. So fans can expect to see new characters doing battle with the terrifying sound-based monsters. It will be interesting to see Nichols’ take on the material which Krasinski was largely involved in creating. Nichols is most known for his work on 2011’s Take Shelter, 2012’s Mud , and 2016’s Loving which have been critically acclaimed.
John Krasinski directed and co-wrote 2018’s A Quiet Place with Bryan Woods and Scott Beck who conceived the initial story. The plot follows Lee and Evelyn Abbot (John Krasinski and Emily Blunt) who struggle to survive and raise their children, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind monsters with an acute sense of hearing. While the direct sequel included these same characters, the Quiet Place spinoff will likely have us meeting new survivors.
The original film grossed over $340 million worldwide and received critical acclaim. It was described as a “smart, wickedly frightening good time” by Rotten Tomatoes, and chosen as one of the top ten films of 2018 by the National Board of Review and American Film Institute.
It also received several award nominations, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture, Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Emily Blunt, which she later won.
The astounding success of the film led to the sequel, A Quiet Place II, and now news of the Quiet Place spinoff. Written and directed by John Krasinki, it is based on the characters created by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck. The story, once again, follows the Abbott family who is forced to take on the terrors of the outside world. After leaving the safety of their home, they soon realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path.
The film sees Emily Blunt reprise her role as Evelyn Abbot alongside John Krasinki, whose character is still set to appear in flashback scenes, and Cillian Murphy as Emmett. After a shaky start due to the cinematic limitations of Covid-19, the film is off to a great start, receiving mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised the story and the addition of a key character.
Whether or not Paramount succeeds in creating an extended universe for A Quiet Place remains to be seen. But the possibilities for a Quiet Place spinoff are endless and should make for great viewing.
