Quentin Tarantino’s Secret And Strange On-Set Ritual For His Crew
On film sets, Quentin Tarantino requires the cast and crew to all shout out that they "love making movies!"
Austin Butler says Quentin Tarantino has an interesting on-set ritual for his cast and crew. When he wants to shoot a scene again, the filmmaker says, “We’re going to do one more. You know why?” In response, everyone screams, “Because we love making movies!” The Elvis star made the revelation during an appearance on the chicken wing-centric talk show Hot Ones.
Butler, who worked with Quentin Tarantino on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, said the ritual initially caught him off guard. “The first time you’re there, you’re not in on it.” But everyone from cameramen to stars like Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio happily oblige, the young actor explained. Although it sounds like a fun quirk from the famed director, it actually serves a larger purpose.
According to Butler, many productions can feel rushed and unpleasant. But Quentin Tarantino’s ritual reminds everyone that making movies is fun. “There are sets that are so sterile, where people are just at a job, and you’re trying to create something that you’re going to give to the world,” Austin Butler explained.
But with Quentin Tarantino, the entire process is much more joyful. “It just changes the atoms in the room,” Butler said of the ritual via IndieWire. “And then the next time [it] happens you’re in on it.” And just like that, every new member from the cast to the crew becomes part of the tribe because they all love making movies.
Austin Butler appeared in 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as a fictional version of Manson Family member Tex Watson. Although he didn’t have much screen time, his performance was hailed by critics who described his portrayal as intense and brooding. Billed as a comedy-drama, the film is written and directed by Quentin Tarantino.
The Quentin Tarantino movie features a large ensemble cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. Set in 1969 Los Angeles, the story follows a fading actor and his stunt double as they navigate the changing film industry. There are also several storylines that pay tribute to Hollywood’s famous golden age.
The project saw Quentin Tarantino return to the director’s chair after four years. He previously worked on The Hateful Eight in 2015. The mystery thriller follows eight strangers who seek refuge from a blizzard in a stagecoach stopover after the American Civil War. It stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern.
Announced in 2013, Quentin Tarantino initially conceived the story as a novel and sequel to his 2012 film Django Unchained. But he later decided to make it a standalone film. Although the filmmaker doesn’t have any new movies in the works, he was the subject of a documentary called QT8: The First Eight in 2019.
Co-produced and directed by Tara Wood, the documentary chronicles the life of Quentin Tarantino, from his start at Video Archives to the release of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It also features interviews with frequent collaborators like Diane Kruger, Kurt Russell, Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx, Lucy Liu, and more.
