In a time when women’s rights are still pushed to the wayside, leading actress Carey Mulligan delivers a commanding performance that begs the question, “Do women really have the safety, freedom, and respect they deserve in this ‘modern’ world?” If you’re a woman, then you already know the answer.
Promising Young Woman is a dark comedy about a woman with a troublesome past looking to exact revenge upon those who did her wrong. Cassie (our hero, played by Mulligan) dealt with losing her best friend in college due to the aftermath of rape.
When Cassie saw that no consequences befell the perpetrator and no faculty was willing to support her after her friend committed suicide, she dropped out of school. After dropping out, Cassie spent her nights going to clubs.
Cassie would act like she was overly intoxicated, wait for some “chivalrous” dude to come to her “rescue,” and reveal her sobriety just before that “nice guy” assaulted her. Unfortunately, a man was always ready and willing to take the bait.
The story of Promising Young Woman then progresses to Cassie finding clever and dark ways to exact revenge on various players in her friend’s rape. One classmate, Madison McPhee, continuously denies that Cassie’s friend, Nina, was ever raped.
Released in December 2020, Promising Young Woman made $19 million worldwide but has gone on to be a streaming favorite.
Cassie responds by getting her drunk and hiring a man to take her to a hotel room. When McPhee wakes up from her stupor, she is extremely disturbed by the situation… just as Cassie had intended.
Later she meets Ryan, who was/is a friend of the guy who raped Nina. After a quick mingle, she learns that Al Monroe (the rapist) is getting married soon. From there, Cassie turns her tactics towards a dangerous and crafty plan to finally deliver the consequences Monroe has had coming all these years.
If you don’t watch Promising Young Woman for the snide, snarky, retaliation and retribution, then you’ll definitely want to watch it for the strong, stoic performance put on by Carey Mulligan. The New York Times wrote that “Mulligan is able to make a person like Cassie seem like … well, a person.”
They went on to comment on her ability to keep a “low-key” nature while doing something extremely “high-key” like marrying Mumford and Sons frontman Marcus Mumford. Carey is so strong in her performances and mystique that being married to Marcus Mumford just seems like a “bonus fact” about her life rather than a notable point.
This isn’t the first time Carey Mulligan has delivered a strong performance either. The actress went big in 2013 with her role as Daisy Buchanan alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby. She also delivered a commanding performance as Kitty Bennet in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice.
Promising Young Woman also stars talents such as Bo Burnham as Ryan, Chris Lowell as Al Monroe, Alison Brie as Madison, and Molly Shannon as Mrs. Fisher. Together, the cast managed a 90 percent on the Tomatometer from Rotten Tomatoes, labeling the flick as a “boldly provocative, timely thriller.”
Carey Mulligan’s performance in Promising Young Woman stands in stark contrast to her work as Daisy in The Great Gatsby opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
It is also to be noted that Promising Young Woman is Emerald Fennell’s directorial debut. In 2017, she pitched the opening scene to Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment, and the film/cast began moving forward with the movie in the summer of 2019.
The movie is certainly not one you’ll want to cuddle up with the family to watch, but it will not fail to provide plenty of adult entertainment with a stern lesson to behold along the way. With a rating of “R,” you’ll want to make sure the kids are in bed for this one.
