Prey 2 Is Actually Happening, Here’s What We Know
The Predator prequel Prey was one of the biggest surprise hits of 2022, and now it looks like the film will be getting a sequel. According to World of Reel, a listing in Production Weekly mentions that Dan Trachtenberg’s Prey 2 is now in development at Hulu. Of course, there are very few details at this time about the sequel and what the story will be about.
The unique period-piece setting, combined with the sci-fi trappings of the Predator franchise, made Prey an interesting and beloved addition to the Predator canon.
This news should come as no surprise, as Dan Trachtenberg had previously discussed his interest and excitement about making Prey 2, and the reception of the first film means the studios would be silly not to green-light another movie.
Many fans considered it the best movie in the Predator franchise since the original, and studios usually aren’t keen on letting good franchises go to waste — especially when there is revitalized fan interest. The question is, where does the sequel go next?
2022’s Prey took the franchise back in time to 1719 and followed Naru (Amber Midthunder) as a young Comanche warrior who ends up facing off with the fearsome predator. This unique period-piece setting, combined with the sci-fi trappings of the Predator franchise, made Prey an interesting and beloved addition to the Predator canon.
It’s possible that the sequel would explore other time periods.
Amber Midthunder’s performance as Naru was a particular highlight, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see her returning for Prey 2.
If both Amber Midthunder and Dan Trachtenberg return for Prey 2, it will mark two unique firsts in the Predator franchise. It would be the first time that a Predator protagonist character returned for another film, and Trachtenberg would be the first director to direct two movies in the franchise. The formula worked well the first time, so there might be no need to mess with success.
With that being said, it’s also possible that the sequel would explore other time periods. Having the Predator face off with Comanche warriors in 1719 was a stroke of brilliance that helped elevate Prey above the other entries in the franchise. Putting Prey 2 in a brand new setting could make it feel fresh and exciting again.
Amber Midthunder’s performance as Naru was a particular highlight, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see her returning for Prey 2.
Still, fans will undoubtedly be disappointed if we don’t get to see Amber Midthunder’s Naru return again for Prey 2, but either way, fans are going to be waiting eagerly to see what Trachtenberg brings to the table.
The only disappointment might be if the studios decide to stream it on Hulu again instead of releasing it to theaters. The sci-fi action of the film made it perfect for a theater-going experience, but Hulu was the only option to see it at the time.
With pandemic restrictions gone and fans chomping at the bit to see Prey 2, perhaps it will get a theatrical release after all. If the film sees a great financial performance at the box office, that would certainly indicate that fans are more than ready for more Predator films in the future. At this time, we’ll just have to wait and see if the film gets a theatrical release or if they decide to keep it on Hulu again.
We’re excited to learn that a sequel to the well-received Predator film Prey, is actually happening. Here’s what we know about it.
