Presumed Innocent Season 2 Reveals Apple TV+’s Record-Breaking Series
Apple TV+ has a hugely successful limited series on its hands with Presumed Innocent. So much so that it’s no longer a limited series and will now be getting a second season. It’s not too surprising, as Apple reported that it’s the most viewed drama of all time on the streaming platform, but the question is where the story goes next.
Jake Gyllenhaal’s Apple Series
Presumed Innocent was created by David E. Kelley and based on Scott Turow’s 1987 novel of the same name. Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the series, which follows a prosecutor who finds himself the prime suspect in the murder of one of his colleagues. Gyllenhaal also serves as executive producer, as does Kelley, Turow, and JJ Abrams.
Follows A New Case
Right now, the only detail about Presumed Innocent Season 2 is that it will follow a suspenseful, brand-new case. With that announcement, it’s possible that it will be more of an anthology series with characters that carry over into the next season. It’s unclear if Jake Gyllenhaal will be reprising his role based on this announcement and the fact that Turow’s follow-up novel The Burden of Proof follows a character from the first book who isn’t in the TV series.
Different Novels To Adapt
Of course, it’s also completely possible that Presumed Innocent Season 2 won’t adapt one of Turow’s novels and will instead tell its own story. There are still two episodes left to air for the first season, so perhaps we’ll get some insight into the direction Season 2 will go after that. There’s also the fact that Turow wrote a novel that is a direct sequel to Presumed Innocent, titled Innocent, which came out in 2011 and follows Gyllenhaal’s character, although it takes place 20 years later.
Gyllenhaal Remains Behind The Scenes
While we don’t know much about the story for Presumed Innocent Season 2, we at least know that Kelley, Abrams, and Gyllenhaal are all returning as executive producers alongside other returning EPs Dustin Thomason, Matt Tinker, and Rachel Rusch Rich from Season 1.
Abrams Bad Robot Productions teamed up with David E Kelley Productions to bring us this Apple TV+ series. The series is also made in association with Warner Bros Television as part of Abrams’ overall deal with the company under his Bad Robot banner.
A Massive Success For Apple
Based on Apple TV’s statement about Presumed Innocent becoming the most viewed drama on the platform, it seems likely the series will be in the Nielsen Top 10 streaming rankings next week. Previous Apple TV+ shows that hit the Nielsen streaming rankings include Hijack and Ted Lasso. Hijack was also a drama series, and it seems that Presumed Innocent has knocked it out of the #1 drama spot on Apple TV.
The Movie Adaptation
Presumed Innocent is the first TV adaptation of Turow’s novel after the 1990 film adaptation that starred Harrison Ford and Brian Dennehy. It seems like putting together a new adaptation was well worth it, as Apple TV+ is raking in the viewers with this one. If you want to catch the rest of the season, the final two episodes premiere on July 17 and July 24.
