1990s Cult Hit Based On Fantasy Book Series Gets Sequel No One Saw Coming
Grab your glass and prepare for more midnight margaritas as Warner Bros. announces the second chapter in its iconic ‘90s film, Practical Magic. Dubbed Practical Magic 2, it’s been reported that the original production’s stars, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, are in talks to reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens, respectively. While a director hasn’t been announced just yet, audiences can expect the tone to match the story that came before it as award-winning screenplay writer Akiva Goldsman will return to pen the script.
The Announcement
Teasing the news at what other time than midnight when the margaritas are flowing, Warner Bros. sent fans into a frenzy of suspicion that a Practical Magic 2 was on the way.
In an attempt to throw the super sleuths off their tracks, the studio announced that Practical Magic was now available for digital purchase as well as streaming on Max.
But, on Monday morning, the big reveal was dropped and with it, a wave of excitement flooded the internet.
Bullock And Kidman Returning?
Right now, no storyline has been set for Practical Magic 2, and it likely will come down to the potential returns of Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock for how the plot will play out.
We’d presume that if the Academy Award-winning actresses sign on for the project, much of the tale will be connected to them.
However, if they pass (mind you, they’re already attached as producers), maybe the candle will be handed down to the next generation. Regardless, we can expect some new and younger faces in the sequel.
Practical Magic
Based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name, the Griffin Dunne-directed Practical Magic starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as the Owen sisters who find themselves increasingly unlucky in love thanks to a family curse.
When Bullock’s character accidentally kills her sister’s abusive ex-boyfriend (Goran Višnjić), the siblings have no choice but to bring him back to life leading to plenty of disastrous hijinks.
Setting things up for Practical Magic 2, the end of the movie sees one of the sisters possibly finding her soulmate and the town accepting that a coven of friendly witches lives alongside them.
Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest
Joining Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock as their aunts in the first film were Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest. As both legendary stars are still involved in the industry, there’s a solid chance they would be open to reprising their roles for Practical Magic 2 – especially if Bullock and Kidman return.
While a second installment to the film series is a win in our book any day, the inclusion of Channing and Wiest would truly put it over the edge as we’d likely see three generations of Owen women in action.
Who Else Will Show Up?
As for who else could appear in Practical Magic 2, the jury’s fully out until we learn more about the storyline so we’ll save our speculation for later. The original flick was helmed by Griffin Dune who audiences may also recognize as the name behind titles including Movie 43 and The Accidental Husband. For now, we’ll eagerly await more news on the witchy sequel and keep our readers up to date with fresh announcements.
