Popular Sports Anime Getting Season 2 And Fans Are Hyped
Sports anime are becoming more and more common, with shows like Megalo Box, Major, Kuroko’s Basketball, and Haikyu!! dominating the charts. Blue Lock is another such anime, and with Blue Lock Season 2 just a few months away, excitement is building up yet again for fans of the sports genre.
Blue Lock Heats Up In Season 2
For those who haven’t seen the show yet, Blue Lock is a story about Japan’s push to be better in soccer (or football, depending on where you live). After failing in the FIFA World Cup of 2018 yet again, they hire the soccer champion Jinpachi Ego (Hiroshi Kamiya) to create the perfect team, focusing on establishing the world’s greatest egotist striker. He uses a series of challenges and competitions to help create the best player, with the competition growing even more fierce in Blue Lock Season 2.
The manga was written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. It’s still ongoing with 29 volumes as of May 2024. At the end of 2023, Blue Lock had over 30 million copies in circulation, which makes it rank up there as one of the best-selling manga series, and the number one best-selling in 2023.
Speculation On Manga Volumes Covered
Blue Lock is set to air on October 5, 2024 on Crunchyroll. The continuation of the series was announced at the end of Season 1 after the end credits of the last episode. However, as for what Blue Lock Season 2 would entail, and when exactly it would come out, there was little information until early July.
Season one was 24 episodes long, and covered about 90 chapters of the manga. The series ended with the top 35 players having advanced to the Third Selection. Since the first season covered about 90 chapters or about half of the manga’s published content, Blue Lock Season 2 will possibly cover about 90 chapters as well, adapting volumes 12 to 23.
However, Blue Lock Season 2 is also meant to be shorter, only 14 episodes, so they may only get through about half of the volumes. This would put them somewhere around volume 18.
Blue Lock: Episode Nagi
For those who missed it, there was also a movie for Blue Lock that came out a few months before Blue Lock Season 2 was set to air. It was a spin-off and is titled Blue Lock: Episode Nagi. The movie was a prequel focused on Seishiro Nagi (Nobunaga Shimazaki), who was a fairly detached soccer player until his rivalry with Yoichi Isagi (Kazuki Ura) began and made him even fiercer competition with his newfound desire to win.
Not Just For Sports Fans
The first season of Blue Lock has an 8.26 out of 10 on My Anime List. Even those who don’t like sports, or sports anime, much may find the series interesting. Though the focus of the series is entirely on getting better at soccer, the unique characters and their personalities helped to keep the series interesting. Hopefully, the quality will continue with Blue Lock Season 2.
The anime comes from 8bit Studios (Laid-Back Camp) with Tetsuaki Watanabe (Haikyuu!!) directing the series along with several episode directors. While the main team will remain the same, some new episode directors will appear for Blue Lock Season 2.
