A new Twitter poll by Giant Freakin Robot indicates that audiences are not interested in watching Netflix’s The Witcher if it does not feature original star Henry Cavill. Twitter users were given the options of an emphatic “Yes!” a more restrained “No.” and “I never watched it anyway.” Overwhelming, the negative response received 46.2 percent of the vote, while respondents who will continue to watch the show came in at a mere 16.3 percent and people who didn’t consider themselves part of the audience took 37.5.

This is a pretty clear indication that the fortunes of The Witcher are tied to Henry Cavill, who Netflix announced was leaving the series in October of 2022 to widespread dismay and surprise amongst fans. At the time, Henry Cavill was a linchpin of both the increasingly expanding Witcher franchise and the DC Extended Universe, in which he portrayed Clark Kent aka Superman. In a shockingly brief amount of time, the British actor went from being a vital part of two huge series to being out in the cold.

Of course, that is a relative statement. Henry Cavill remains a widely sought-after A-list actor, with leading roles in a number of upcoming films, so it is not likely he is back to square one. Among his imminent projects, the most prominent is Argylle, a new spy thriller from Matthew Vaughn that will feature a huge slate of co-stars, including Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, pop singer Dua Lipa in her big screen debut, and Cavill’s own bizarre hairstyle.

After Henry Cavill left The Witcher (the circumstances of which are still somewhat vague and contentious), the lead role of Geralt of Rivera was recast with Liam Hemsworth, the Australian actor best known for his role in the Hunger Games, his off-and-on relationship with pop singer Miley Cyrus, and being the younger sibling of Chris Hemsworth, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor. Hemsworth will take over the role starting with season 4, which has been confirmed to be in production but has no release date as of yet.

Henry Cavill will appear in The Witcher season 3, which will be released sometime in the summer of 2023, so the fans who responded they only want to watch the show with Cavill will at least get a swan song set of episodes to appreciate him in.

In addition to Argylle, Henry Cavill is rumored to be joining almost every franchise imaginable with the exception of Netflix’s Enola Holmes, in which he does not appear to be reprising the role of Jacked Sherlock Holmes. However, it is very possible that Cavill could be appearing as a villain in a new James Bond movie, alongside a different Sherlock Holmes in some capacity, in the third Kingsman movie, a movie adapted from his beloved Call of Duty or an Amazon series based on his equally beloved Warhammer 40K franchise.

It seems the world is Henry Cavill’s oyster at the moment, but fans of him in The Witcher are just not that lucky.
