It is probably not surprising that rumors have started about a potential Plastic Man movie being in development for the new DCU under the leadership of James Gunn. However, what is surprising is the director supposedly interested in helming the project, someone who does not exactly do the typical superhero movie formula. If rumors are to be believed, the Plastic Man movie could be directed by Darren Aronofsky.

Aronofsky

Aronofsky has only done eight movies in his career, but he has certainly established a particular style for his films. Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan, and mother! are some of his most noteworthy projects. His films are pretty infamous for often being very dark, bleak, difficult to watch stories. So it is certainly a surprise that a character as light-hearted as Plastic Man would interest Darren Aronofsky.

A Second Chance

It should be noted that while a Plastic Man movie has never been made before, James Gunn himself actually pitched the project years ago for Warner Bros.

It was obviously rejected at the time, but perhaps with his newfound leadership role for the DC movies, Gunn wants to see the character finally get a spotlight. If Plastic Man will indeed be handled by Darren Aronofsky, it will be interesting to hear what Gunn’s reasoning is for going with the director.

What Kind Of Movie Would Aronofsky Make?

Aronofsky is undeniably talented, but his movies can often deal with disturbing themes. However, audiences responded well to his most recent entry, The Whale, which earned Brendan Fraser an Oscar for Best Actor.

If Plastic Man does get made by Darren Aronofsky, it will be fascinating to see whether he uses the character for his typical dark story themes, or if Aronofsky will change his style to be more like a typical superhero film.

Stranger Things Have Happened

To be fair, if Plastic Man was handled in a more mature fashion, it would not be the first comic book movie to deal with deeper themes. 2019’s Joker did so as an R-rated story and wound up earning over $1 billion.

So audiences are clearly receptive to such a premise. Though Plastic Man would certainly be a more surprising character choice for such a movie if Darren Aronofsky did go that route.

If the movie is going to happen, it would not be for a while yet, as Aronofsky’s next project, Caught Stealing, will begin filming soon. So if Plastic Man is in the cards for Darren Aronofsky, one would have to imagine it would not be moving forward until at least the middle of next year.

More News To Come

We already know the new DCU officially kicks off next July with the release of James Gunn’s Superman. What DC projects lie beyond that movie is something that has not been discussed much.

A great deal probably hinges on how well Superman performs critically and financially. But Plastic Man would definitely be a fresh face to feature for a movie, and Darren Aronofsky would no doubt do something unique with the character.

As the new DCU tries to usher in a fresh era that will set it apart from the MCU, perhaps they are looking to make a bold statement with their new direction. James Gunn is certainly no stranger to being a risk taker.

If it is officially confirmed Plastic Man will be directed by Darren Aronofsky, fan interest will no doubt be piqued.
