Another member of the ensemble cast of the Mamma Mia! movies has expressed his interest in returning for a third movie. According to Entertainment Weekly, Pierce Brosnan told Good Morning America that Mamma Mia! 3 is in the planning stages. This news confirms rumors that have been in circulation since 2020.

The first two Mamma Mia! movies center around Sophie and her mother Donna on the Greek islands, where Donna runs a hotel. The first movie is about Sophie’s wedding and her search for her father to walk her down the aisle. The second movie sees Sophie attempting to reunite Donna with all her old friends as Sophie awaits the birth of her child.

Pierce Brosnan plays Sam Carmichael, one of the three men who were in love with Donna during the period when Sophie may have been conceived. The movies also feature Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, and Julie Walters as Donna and her bandmates the Dynamos, Amanda Seyfried as Sophie, and Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard as Harry and Bill, Donna’s other lovers. The ensemble cast is complimented by the music of ABBA, who also wrote the music for the play of the same name.

In addition to Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Christine Baranski have also indicated that they would participate in a proposed sequel. However, at the time they confirmed their interest, the only indication of a new movie was a 2020 interview with producer Judy Craymer, who told the Daily Mail that “there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see.” Craymer did also state that a new movie would include new songs from ABBA.

Pierce Brosnan’s appearance on Good Morning America is the first confirmation that a movie is finally in the works, as the actor admitted that “Yes, of course, I’m sure there’s some plans” when asked about a third installment. This is as definitive an answer as can be in the movie world, especially with so many other prominent figures from the movie dropping hints since the release of the second installment in 2018.

Judy Craymer indicated in her interview that fans may have gotten to see Donna, Sophie, Sam, and the rest of the cast sooner had it not been for “Covid fog.” The pandemic has halted the development and production of a myriad of movie and television projects, and it seems Craymer is recovering from her own encounters with the illness. The statements Pierce Brosnan made on Good Morning America are hopefully a hint that Craymer has been able to devote more time to the project.

In addition to the Mamma Mia! movies, Pierce Brosnan is known for several outings as James Bond, including Goldeneye, Die Another Day, Tomorrow Never Dies, and The World is not Enough. His body of work includes a variety of genres, from action films like Dante’s Peak to horror films like False Positive and even dark comedies like The Matador. His latest release, Black Adam, in which he co-stars with Dwayne Johnson, opens in theaters on October 21.
