The number one movie on Amazon Prime Video for the past week is not what you would think. No, it is not some popular action blockbuster or a horror film skyrocketing on the charts as people get hyped for Halloween with October starting this Friday. It is the latest Pierce Brosnan (Tomorrow Never Dies) movie, the modern retelling of Cinderella.
According to FlixPatrol, the Pierce Brosnan musical has been taking the number one spot since September 21, quite a few weeks after its September 3 release. It holds this position in the United States, Norway (then being bumped down to number two since yesterday, September 26), and swapping between two and one for the Czech Republic. The film has been in the top three in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain.
Cinderella takes a twist on the classic story. The heroine, played by singer Camila Cabello, has dreams of opening up her own shop called Dresses by Ella. With the help of her Fabulous Godmother, played by Billy Porter (Pose), she might be able to get to that point. She also falls in love with Prince Robert, played by Nicholas Galitzine (Chambers), but the King, played by Pierce Brosnan, does not approve. It is a story of the lead falling in love and aiming for success in a patriarchal society.
The film was written and directed by Kay Cannon (Girlboss). It stars Camila Cabello, Pierce Brosnan, Nicholas Galitzine, Billy Porter, Idina Menzel (Uncut Gems), Minnie Driver (Speechless), Charlotte Spencer (The Living and the Dead), and night show host James Corden, who also produced the project. Jonathan Kadin, Irene Marquette, Shannon McIntosh, and Leo Pearlman produced too. Josephine Rose and Louise Rosney acted as executive producers. Sony Pictures and Fulwell 73 produced with Amazon Studios distributing the modern take on the classic tale.
Despite some heavy-hitters like Pierce Brosnan within the cast and the experienced director and writer, the critics were not too pleased. Rotten Tomatoes has the film’s critic score at an abysmal 42 percent with 122 submitted reviews. It does something to the old story with some refreshing decisions, but the dialogue and performances tanked into something quite miserable to watch. No audience score was given even with 1,000 reviews, but people were torn about enjoying the wild ride despite acknowledging it to not be that good of a movie. Some people could not even stomach a minute of the experience.
Polygon called the Pierce Brosnan movie an “unwatchable mess.” The review slammed the film for its stereotyping, disjointed ideas, and bland costume design.
Various outlets, from Polygon to RogerEbert.com, made connections to the Pierce Brosnan film’s attempt to appeal to young audiences with its TikTok style and political game. What these critics mean by comparing Cinderella to the video platform is its lack of flow, dances, and attempt to be political, but it seems critics would much rather spend over an hour on TikTok than watching the Amazon musical.
Variety gave credit to the director-writer of the Pierce Brosnan musical. It can be seen that a real attempt was made to deliver something new, but the execution fell apart.
Not everyone hated the film with pop star Camila Cabello, Pierce Brosnan, and James Corden. AV Club noted that if you can get past hearing the cast sing songs from Ed Sheeran and other modern icons, then you might make it through by having a good time. IndieWire compared the film to The Greatest Showman with Hugh Jackman (Logan) due to its obvious narrative flaws, but the spectacle of the experience makes up for its shortcomings.
For being a musical, most critics were not inspired. Pierce Brosnan, in particular, was hammered for his bad singing. Meanwhile, while some people had the right voice, the choreography of the dancing was mostly deemed to be quite boring. The song choice also hurt the film as much of it did not go with what was happening in the story or with its cast of characters.
Is Pierce Brosnan really that bad at singing? How is the film’s fashion choices? Are the dances really that dull? If you are curious about Amazon’s hit yet poorly received take on Cinderella, then you can check it out now.
