Fancasting has already begun for the sequel to Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, and if the rumors of an appearance by his sidekick Robin are true, we may have a front-runner for the role. Instagram artist Josh, aka clements.ink, has created some fantastic fanart envisioning Percy Jackson actor Walker Scobell as The Boy Wonder. Sporting a pretty faithful adaptation of the comic book Robin costume, although with some muted colors, the art makes a pretty convincing argument that Scobell would be a great fit for the role.
Walker Scobell may be best known for his role in the recent Netflix hit The Adam Project, in which he plays a younger version of Adam (Ryan Reynolds), a time-traveling pilot on a mission to save the future by stopping a conspiracy to re-write the past. It was Scobell’s first acting role, and he impressed critics and viewers with his earnest, down-to-earth performance. He followed that up with a role in Secret Headquarters, a superhero movie for the Paramount+ streaming service starring Owen Wilson.
His next role, however, may be his biggest, as he was cast in the lead role in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a series adaptation of Rick Riordan’s popular line of Young Adult books. Percy Jackson has a huge following, as the books have sold over 69 million copies worldwide, so anticipation for the series is high. Just over a week ago, at the D23 Expo (a Disney fan event), the first teaser trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians dropped, which Walker Scobell narrated and appears in briefly.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Robin in a live-action, big-screen Batman movie, and The Batman 2 may provide the perfect opportunity. Batman Day was just celebrated on September 17, and while no new announcements were made on The Batman 2, rumors abound that Matt Reeves plans to take Bruce Wayne’s story in a different direction, which could include meeting Dick Grayson. Giant Freakin Robot readers shouldn’t be too surprised that Walker Scobell is being discussed by fans as a possible Robin, as we reported exclusively earlier this year that the 13-year-old was being seriously considered by DC and Warner Bros. for the role.
The Batman followed Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) as he faces his greatest battle, in just his second year of crimefighting, as he hunts down the murderous Riddler (Paul Dano). He also crosses paths with Oz/The Penguin (Colin Farrell) and Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) in an effort to save Gotham City from destruction. Nothing official has been announced for the sequel just yet, so if Walker Scobell is indeed being eyed to play Robin, we won’t know for some time.
Meanwhile, Percy Jackson likely won’t hit Disney+ until early 2024, well before The Batman 2 would premiere in theaters, so fans of Walker Scobell will have to wait until then to see him on the screen in any capacity. Joining him in the series is Leah Jeffries (Beast) as Annabeth Chase, the warrior daughter of Athena, and Aryan Simhadri plays Grover, a satyr who is Percy’s protector and best friend. Among the other cast members are Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Timm Sharp, and Megan Mullally.
