Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey have been waiting on The Last Of Us to premiere for a long time, but not nearly as long as fans. Now, everyone can celebrate as one of the first signs that the HBO series is truly on the way has been shared online. We have our first look at the pair in an image from The Last Of Us, courtesy of co-showrunner Neil Druckmann.

The image shows Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey looking out at a crashed airplane, wearing clothes very similar to what their characters wore in the Sony-owned video game. Neil Druckmann shared the photo, saying that the first time he saw the pair in person and in costume, he knew they were the ones to be playing the parts.
Seeing characters previously established in one medium and then brought to life in another must be a strange thing for a creator. Neither actor is unfamiliar with performing in an adaptation. Bella Ramsey was in Game of Thrones, adapted from the novels by George R.R. Martin. Pedro Pascal was also in Game of Thrones. More recently, he was in Wonder Woman 1984 for DC, which is loosely adapted from the comics.
The Last Of Us video game came out in 2013, and fans were immediately asking for a movie. It seemed so obvious. There was just so much story in the game. The following year, Sony announced its plans to make a movie happen. Neil Druckmann became involved as a writer for the project. And then, as so often happens, the project went into a strange limbo where it easily could have disappeared forever. It was years before a series was announced, co-showrunner Craig Mazin was signed on, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were cast, and the project finally moved forward.
Audiences can expect The Last Of Us to be a post-apocalyptic story with stunning visuals. The show is reportedly spending more than $10 million per episode. Those are huge numbers. The story is supposed to see the United States after a pandemic where the infected are turned into a variety of monsters, so some of the budget went to creating the various creatures. Some likely went to stars like Pedro Pascal. And a lot of the rest likely went to creating the post-apocalyptic United States for the characters to traverse. The story follows the pair trying to get from one side of the country to the other.
Pedro Pascal’s career has grown a lot in recent years. When he appeared in Game of Thrones in 2014 he was relatively unknown to American audiences. Now, he’s known for projects like Narcos, Wonder Woman 1984, and as the lead role in The Mandalorian. Soon, he’ll be seen in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent with Nicolas Cage. Currently, The Last Of Us has no release date, but fans are expecting to see the new series premiere in 2022 on HBO and HBO Max.
